With its sun-drenched streets and distinct culture, it’s not always necessary to hop into a taxi or hail an Uber when in Barcelona. They’re more expensive, add to already congested roads, and contribute to unwanted fumes.

Whether you’re gliding through historic neighbourhoods on a Segway, strolling past Gaudí’s masterpieces, or cycling along the beachfront, there are plenty of low-emissions options to get you from point A to point B. Why not embrace sustainable travel and keep your carbon footprint light?

From bustling markets like the Mercat de Sant Antoni to the serene paths of Montjuïc, we encourage you to travel responsibly.

We dive into some of the best ways to see this stunning city without compromising on the environment.

By foot

This is as low-emissions as it gets.

Walking in Barcelona is the ultimate eco-friendly way to discover the city. With its narrow streets, charming plazas, and wealth of architectural wonders, every step reveals something unknown. Sure, it can be a bit tiring. But it’s also how you stumble upon the hidden gems that you could miss when using other forms of transport.

Most first-timers like to start in the Gothic Quarter, meandering through medieval streets before arriving at the Barcelona Cathedral. From there, head towards El Born for hip boutiques and lively bars. And don’t miss the chance to walk down Passeig de Gràcia, home to Gaudí’s masterpieces, Casa Batlló and La Pedrera.

If you’re feeling energetic, walk up to Park Güell for breathtaking views of the city and more of Gaudí’s creations. Or, take a stroll along the beachfront promenade in Barceloneta, perfect for a quick beer and people-watching.

Walking can be exhausting, but it’s undoubtedly the most rewarding. Just be sure to pack your most comfortable pair of shoes to get you through those daily steps.

By Segway

Yeah, it’s what we do at Barcelona Segway.

But it really is a brilliant way to explore the city, adding a touch of fun to your sightseeing. Since segways are electrically powered, it’s also kind to the environment, producing no harmful exhaust fumes.

Moving through the streets, you’ll cover more ground than on foot while still feeling the breeze and soaking up the atmosphere. Imagine cruising down Via Laeitana or along the kilometres of beach walk on a summer day. Segways are fantastic to share the joy of visiting the Catalan capital with friends and/or family.

Plus, with professional guides to show you around and ensure your safety, you can relax and enjoy the ride. Our tours are designed to be both informative and entertaining, with insider tips and fascinating stories.

By bike or eBike

Then you’ve got bicycles – a trend which started in Barcelona long before the last pandemic.

With over 200 kilometres of dedicated bike lanes, you can pedal through the different neighbourhoods with ease and safety. Whether you choose a traditional bicycle or an eBike, you’ll find that cycling offers a perfect blend of exercise and exploration.

EBikes are especially handy for tackling the city’s hills – pretty much anything north of Avinguda Diagonal – where you can be rewarded with stunning panoramic views.

Cycling not only reduces your carbon footprint but also lets you experience the city at your own pace, making spontaneous stops at charming cafes or hidden courtyards. So, hop on one and let Barcelona unfold around you, one pedal stroke at a time.

By metro and train

Barcelona’s underground marvels, the metro and FGC (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya), offer another low-emissions way to traverse this city. With over 160 stations scattered across 12 metro and FGC lines, getting from the historic El Raval to the tech hubs of Sant Martí is a breeze.

The metro, managed by TMB, is quite impressive. If you think of strike-ridden France and Italy, you realize that not all Mediterranean nations can boast of the punctuality, reliability, and relative cleanliness of their underground trains. With the metro zipping through tunnels every few minutes, it’s often the go-to option for residents and tourists. Most of the fleet runs on electricity, contributing to a greener Barcelona with every ride.

Simultaneously, there’s the FGC network of both commuter trains and urban lines. It basically extends the reach to the surrounding Catalan region, seamlessly connecting the urban core of Barcelona with the outer suburbs and other picturesque towns. The FGC lines are known for their cleanliness and comfort, making them a favourite among commuters and day-trippers.

By bus

And finally, there’s the bus network. With over 1,000 buses crisscrossing the city on more than 100 lines, getting around has never been easier—or greener.

The commitment to sustainability shines through with a modern, low-emission fleet, including electric and hybrid buses that help keep the city’s air cleaner and fresher. Not only do they cut down on emissions, but they’re also a quieter and smoother ride for folks to enjoy.

The purchase of 88 new electric buses for 2024 underscores the city’s dedication to expanding its climate-friendly fleet. Whether you’re hopping on a local bus to the Gothic Quarter or catching a ride to Camp Nou, you’ll find the buses frequent, reliable (99% of the time!), and an excellent way to soak in the sights without contributing to pollution.

The Aerobús network, whisking travellers from El Prat Airport to the city centre in a jiffy, is one not to miss either. In line with the rest of the system, these blue buses run on low-emission fuels to reduce their carbon footprint. The best part? They operate every 5 to 10 minutes, ensuring you never have to wait long to start your adventure.

You see. There are plenty of budget-friendly, efficient (and low emissions!) alternatives to taxis, Ubers, and the like.

While you’re planning your next vacation to Barcelona, remember to book a Segway tour with us! It’s a low emissions way to see some of the city’s top attractions.

Another option for getting to Cadaqués from Barcelona is by bus. The journey takes around 3 hours and there are several daily buses that depart from the Estaciò del Nord bus station in Barcelona. The bus journey is scenic and a good option if you don’t have a car, but it’s also longer and less convenient than driving.

Train

You can also take a train from Barcelona to Cadaqués. The journey takes around 3 hours in total, with one transfer required in Figueres. Trains depart regularly from Barcelona Sants station and the journey is comfortable and affordable. Once you arrive in Figueres, you’ll need to transfer to a local bus or taxi that will take you the remaining distance to Cadaqués.

Taxi

Finally, you can take a taxi to Cadaqués from Barcelona. This is the most expensive option, but also the most convenient and one of the quickest. A taxi journey takes around 2 hours, depending on traffic conditions, and you can book a taxi in advance to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey. Taxis can be arranged from the airport or from your hotel in Barcelona. It would be expensive for one person but for a group, it might not work out as pricey as you might think – just over 50 Eur per person, with no stress.

In conclusion, there are several options for getting from Barcelona to Cadaqués, including by car, bus, train, and taxi. The quickest and most convenient option is to drive, while the most affordable option is to take the bus. Whatever option you choose, you’re sure to enjoy the scenic journey and the charming town of Cadaqués when you arrive.

In recent years, Barcelona has become the epicentre of the best music festivals in Spain, if not in Europe. Its cosmopolitan atmosphere makes it the ideal city to host prestigious festivals. Due to their international reputation, these festivals attract thousands of visitors every year from all over the world. Just like the city itself.

The Catalan capital comes alive with numerous music festivals for all music lovers. Rock, electro, jazz, indie… there is something for pretty much everyone! We have put together a list of the best festivals in Barcelona to celebrate music, art, culture and life throughout the year and spend some unforgettable moments.

Sónar

Sónar is one of the biggest and most famous experimental electro festivals in the world, perhaps the biggest rave you’ll ever attend. Every year in June, it brings together the most famous DJs and their emerging counterparts. The week is marked by street parties and clubs all over the city, accompanied by unofficial mashups and goofy activities that only serve to highlight the tracks featured.

Around the summer solstice, the city literally begins to move to the rhythm of Sónar, whose endless events are difficult to describe in a few lines. The festival is hailed by many as Europe’s best electronic celebration, and taking a look at past editions can cause a rare form of retrospective jealousy. While music takes center stage, the festival also emphasizes multimedia art and design through stunning light shows, video presentations, and various performing arts.

Primavera Sound

Another great event that takes place in late May-early June that you cannot miss is Primavera Sound. It takes place in an iconic industrial space in Barcelona known as the Parc del Fòrum. It is a festival of pop rock music and underground trends that brings together different generations and has had an enormous development since its first edition in 2001. Artists such as Radiohead, Pavement, Patti Smith, and Arcade Fire, among many other legendary acts have performed here.

Being one of the most popular festivals in Barcelona, in each edition it has more than a dozen ‘headlining’ groups and you can expect nothing less every year. Ticket sales skyrocket and the full capacity is filled in just a few days, to the great surprise from locals, who usually receive their tickets just a few weeks before the festival.

@primavera_sound

Cruïlla Festival

Image Credits: Cruïlla – Andres Iglesias

The Cruïlla Festival is a bubbly event that brings together many musicians from all over the world with eclectic styles. It is distinguished from similar events by the criteria for selecting artists, fewer in number bur more curated. Thus, the stage of this festival that takes place every year in July has welcomed hundreds of groups and singers, from Iggy Pop to Robert Plant through Cat Power and Gogol Bordello.

A festival that offers dancing, jumping, but above all enjoying this summer more than ever. Without a doubt, it has climbed positions and has already become a reference festival, being a great competition of the greats. Taking place primarily in the Parc del Fòrum, like Primavera, this festival is the perfect place to see your favorite stars as well as emerging artists.

Combined with a strong focus on art and sustainability – striving to minimize its social and environmental impact – DGTL is another festival that’s held at the Parc del Fòrum in Barcelona. This attraction keeps people coming back year after year, making visitors want to discover new talent.

Vida Festival

To go to the Vida Festival, you have to venture out of Barcelona and follow the beaches to the south. But the decoration is worth it: buried in the woods and having part of the venue overlooking the sea, Vida knew how to play in an idyllic setting to attract the local indie audience and their thirst for an intimate atmosphere. Bring the kids to relax at The Nest, bring your bike for a ride around the town of Vilanova, and bring a sense of wonder to enjoy all the art.

Vida is the evolution of the Faraday festival, of which it retains the same spirit. Every year it is celebrated in Vilanova i la Geltrú, this boutique festival has become a welcome addition to the Spanish summer. Unlike some of the other festivals included in this list, Vida includes camping so you can stay overnight at the festival.

MUTEK is a week-long arts festival that celebrates art in all its forms throughout the city through eclectic and soulful productions. It has all kinds of works of art for you, from performing arts to painting, multimedia, pen drawing, crafts, sculpture and more. The exhibitions are accompanied by interventions and conferences by the many participating artists, which reveal the state of mind that animated them when they created the works.

Multidisciplinary at heart, the MUTEK dedicates the other part of its programming to new media and digital creation, with the help of screenings, conferences and workshops. So it’s more than a music festival; the event calls itself a “digital creation festival” and seeks to highlight the scope of the possibilities of interaction between audiovisual visionaries and experimental electronics. It’s an avant-garde posture that offers a refreshing counterpoint in a landscape of giant promoters.

In traveling it has become vital to respect sustainable tourism. Barcelona is at the forefront of sustainable tourism in its offerings – with many places and companies accredited by Biosphere which is a leading Sustainable Tourism certification from the Responsible Tourism Institute. The future of the tourism sector depends on sustainable tourism. It is essential that we respect and preserve our city, Barcelona, the environment and the coexistence between tourists and locals as much as possible.

Here’s our list of eco-friendly and sustainable activities and places in Barcelona.

Brunch in the Park

Brunch-In the Park makes us dance to electronica in summer, always opening the new season with a great setlist. Great artists from around the world, such as Amélie Lens, Boris Brejcha, Carl Cox or Deborah De Luca, among many others, are coming to the city this summer to make us dance non-stop every Sunday. This edition, which takes place from July 3 to October 9, has fourteen sessions spread over different locations: the Gardens of Joan Brossa, the Parc de la Trinitat, the Fòrum and the Servei d’Esports de la UB.

The attraction of the festival, which over the years has become one of the most popular outdoor events in the city, comes not only from the music and the renowned artists who pass through it, but also from its environmental commitment and of its calm atmosphere. which makes it so appealing to groups of friends, music lovers and families with young children. Indeed, like the other seasons, this one also offers Petit Brunch, a set of activities and free workshops for children.

Barcelona has a relatively new botanical garden. It is located on the mountain of Montjuïc, between the castle and the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, it covers an area of 14 hectares and its shape is reminiscent of a large amphitheater. It preserves collections of plants from all over the world and offers a magnificent view of the Llobregat delta, the Olympic ring and part of the metropolitan area of Barcelona.

The cost to enter is 3.5 euros and the reduced cost is 1.70. Free entry on the first Sunday of the month.

Las Ramblas

The transformation of the Ramblas is in process. The first phase of the remodeling of the passage includes modifying the layout of Avenida Drassanes to lengthen the Rambla and open it to the sea. The remodeling of the Ramblas will leave more space for pedestrians and less for vehicles. The objective is to modernize the promenade, to make it greener, friendlier and more comfortable to reactivate local shops.

In addition, this new Ramblas will be very unique because three crossroads will become spaces that will enhance the architectural heritage and the urban context. They will be the Moja-Betlem space, the Pla de la Boqueria and the Pla del Teatre, which will be like a square that will be configured in a different way, with a single platform, to responce to the morphology of the space.

Garden Square in Eixample

The interior of the block which delimits the streets of London-Muntaner will be transformed into a green space accessible to the public. This was decided by the Government Commission of Barcelona City Hall, with an urban plan to open this space of approximately 2,146 square meters to the public. Since 1986, the Eixample has been working to recover the interiors of blocks designed by Ildefons Cerdà that have lost their original value.

The creation of this green space is an important step in the program to recover the interiors of blocks, since the London-Muntaner crossroads had no public gardens within 200 meters. The interior of the block will be transferred free of charge to the Town Hall and in exchange, the basement and the ground floor will be provided with commercial uses and parking. Public access will be through the passage at number 86 Calle de Londres and the Court of Lights will be equipped with green elements and street furniture for the enjoyment of neighbors.

Visiting the beautiful Catalan capital in an eco-sustainable way is easy and fun. Why not see the city on one of our Segways, they’re fully electric and emissions free. You could see all of Gaudí’s beautiful buildings on our Gaudí Segway Tour, for example.

For Barcelona, like most coastal cities, tourism is one of the most important economic activities that takes place. It makes a massive contribution to the economy and also impacts society in both positive and negative ways.

Barcelona has seen significant tourism growth for almost three decades now, with tourism taking a key role in the growth of the city. However, in recent times the significant expansion of tourist activity in the city has ignited the debate about the importance of sustainable tourism practices for the benefit of the city.

This is why we are so excited to announce that we have officially been certified under the Biosphere Certification for our commitment to sustainability in the tourism field. We want the tourism that we’re involved in to be as sustainable and beneficial as possible for everyone.

Being recognized for our work towards sustainable practices is something we are very proud of at Barcelona Segway Tour. The Biosphere Responsible Tourism certification is granted by the Responsible Tourism Institute – an independent organisation. This is a prestigious certification that recognizes those within the international tourism industry who have made sustainable tourism management the focus of their activity.

To achieve the certification, companies should provide non-invasive goods and services that meet the goals of sustainable tourism – satisfying the needs of current customers while not compromising future generations. Being certified under Biosphere guarantees that there is a suitable balance regarding economic, environmental and the social-cultural aspects of a tourist destination. This balance means that the organisation, customers, society and the environment will all gain significant benefits.

In our case this means we’ll satisfy our Segway Tour customers while also bringing benefits to the people who live Barcelona, and not harming the environment or ocean around the city.

It’s also worth noting that the first urban destination to obtain the Biosphere certification was also Barcelona, for its commitment to sustainability. Biosphere certifications for destinations are rated in three categories: the Certified Destination, the Biosphere Gold Destination and the Biosphere Platinum Destination. Barcelona has received the status of the Biosphere Gold Destination, which recognizes the city’s continuing commitment to sustainable tourism.

So, tell us, what do you know about sustainability? What actions do you take or are planning to take to be a part of the sustainable movement? In this ever-changing world it is more important each day that we all take part of these actions to make sure our future will be in good shape.
