All Those is a go-to for those seeking a mix of artisanal products, street food, and local flair. This event pops up only twice a year and in different locations, often taking over iconic spots like the Moll de la Fusta in Barcelona’s Villa Olimpica, or gardens like the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya. What makes All Those special is its focus on small-scale, independent producers who are passionate about their craft, whether that’s homemade jams or organic wines.

And it’s more than just food. You can browse stalls and munch on the city’s best cheesecake, while listening to live music. The market takes sustainability seriously, with many vendors emphasizing locally-sourced ingredients and eco-friendly packaging.

There’s also plenty of hands-on fun with workshops ranging for urban gardening to making your own kombucha. And yes, All Those is family-friendly, so you can bring the little ones along for some wholesome weekend fun.

El Nacional is one of Barcelona’s most iconic dining spots tucked inside a beautifully restored 19th-century building on the central Passeig de Gràcia. As soon as you step inside, you’re hit with the grandeur of its decor—high ceilings, elegant arches, and an atmosphere that makes it feel like you’ve entered a bustling, somewhat elevated, European food hall.

What sets it apart is that this restaurant is home to four dining spaces and four bars, each offering something distinct. And it was the first to do so in the Catalan capital.

For fish and seafood lovers, La Llotja is where you’ll want to park yourself. But if you’re after traditional Spanish meats, La Braseria has you covered with juicy steaks and hearty plates. Note that these two areas are the only ones that accept reservations within the entire restaurant. If you’re caught in the queue, you can always wait it out with a glass of cava or vermouth.

El Nacional takes pride in showcasing the best of Spain with fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from throughout the countrty. And it’s not just the food—each of the four bars specializes in something unique, from signature cocktails to an impressive selection of Spanish wines.

Tucked away in El Born, Okio Asian Street Market brings another burst of color, flavors, and energy to the neighbourhood. This lesser-known gem is designed to give you a feel of a bustling Asian night market, with neon lights, colorful murals, and strong aromas. The moment you walk in, you’re greeted by a lively vibe that perfectly captures the culture of Japan, Thailand, and other Asian hotspots.

Okio is all about celebrating street food, offering a variety of dishes that are fresh, authentic, and packed with bold flavors. Whether you’re in the mood for baos, pad thai, or a dish with even more spice like a stir-fry or some spicy sushi, there’s something for every curious palate.

The ambiance is just as much a draw, with its trendy, neon-soaked aesthetic. It’s the perfect spot for a casual night out with friends or a fun date night, where the food and vibe transport you to the alleys of Asia without needing to board a transatlantic flight.

Palo Market Fest is a monthly event that captures the creative energy of Barcelona. Held in the artsy -formerly industrial- Poblenou district, it transforms the historic Palo Alto Factory into a lively hub of local talent, craftsmanship, and tasty bites.

The gathering brings together independent designers, artisans, and chefs, offering visitors a chance to explore handmade goods, vintage clothing, and eco-friendly products. Of course, the experience isn’t complete without the gourmet food trucks parked on-site.

They’re scattered throughout the market, serving up a wide range of flavors from juicy burgers to vegan dishes, all made with sustainably-sourced ingredients. You’ll also find artisanal snacks and homemade pastries, adding to the festival’s culinary appeal. If it isn’t a beer someone’s holding, you’ll most likely be seeing an aperol spritz in most festival goers’ hands.

Palo Alto is a perfect weekend hangout spot for anyone looking to tap into Barcelona’s artistic pulse while enjoying great food and music.

Whether you’re a traveler in search of a memorable experience or a local looking for new adventures, Barcelona at night offers a new twist on the classics. Here’s a guide to some of the best things to do after dark…

1. Explore the Gothic Quarter’s enigmatic streets

The Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic) is one of Barcelona’s most ancient neighborhoods. At night, its narrow, winding streets take on a mystical charm, illuminated by the soft glow of street lamps. Walking through the labyrinthine alleys, you’ll discover hidden squares, medieval architecture, and centuries-old buildings.

Pont del bisbe in Barcelona’s Gothic quarter

For a unique experience, consider joining a night walking tour. Some of these tours focus on the darker side of the Gothic Quarter’s history, delving into stories of ghosts, legends, wars, and unsolved mysteries. Even if you choose to explore on your own, don’t miss landmarks like the Barcelona Cathedral and Plaça Reial, where you can stop at nearby terraces for a late-night beverage.

Insider’s tip: one of the area’s hidden gems is the Plaça de Sant Felip Neri. We’ll not tell you exactly how to get there, as that’d spoil the adventure, but check on Google Maps and you should be able to navigate to this serenest of Barcelona’s squares.

2. Marvel at the magic fountain of Montjuïc

One of Barcelona’s most iconic nighttime spectacles is the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc. Located in the Plaça d’Espanya, this fountain was built in 1929 and has since become a must-see. The Magic Fountain bursts to life with a dazzling light and music show, resplendent with synchronized water jets, colorful lights, and melodies that range from classical to contemporary hits.

The show is free, and it typically runs on Thursday to Sunday nights, making it an ideal activity for those wanting to relax after a day of sightseeing. It’s also a great prelude to an evening spent exploring the rest of Montjuïc Hill, which offers panoramic views of the city.

Insider’s tip: because of recent drought issues in the city, the Magic Fountain isn’t always on and has been switched off for much of 2024. Thankfully, due to the drought easing somewhat, it’s due to make a comeback soon but check ahead rather than turning up and risking the disappointment of a drained fountain.

3. Indulge in nighttime tapas (and pintxos)

No visit to Barcelona would be complete without indulging in its culinary delights, and the city’s tapas scene comes into its own at night. Tapas bars are scattered throughout the city, offering small plates of delicious, flavorful dishes that pair perfectly with a ‘copa de cava’ or a cold cerveza.

Head to areas like El Born, Poble Sec, or Gràcia, where locals and tourists alike fill the streets, hopping from one tapas bar to the next. As well as all the creative tapas on offer, be sure to try classic tapas dishes like patatas bravas (fried potatoes with a piquant tomato sauce) and croquetas (fried croquettes filled with ham, chicken or other fillings).

For a more northern Spanish twist, visit one of Barcelona’s many pintxos bars, where small bites are skewered with toothpicks and displayed on the bar counter. Pintxos are perfect for a cheeky late-night snack while mingling with locals. One popular spot to try is Carrer de Blai, a street in the Poble Sec neighborhood known for its generous parade of pintxos bars.

Insider’s tip: the tapas in Barcelona can be mediocre in the tourist traps. Over at Barcelona Food Experience there’s a handy list of some of the best places. One of our tips is Bar del Pla, in the central Born neighborhood, which hosts a beguiling mix of locals, international visitors, and creative small plates. Note that you’ll almost always need to reserve ahead here, and in the other top places.

4. Experience live flamenco

Flamenco, though originating in southern Spain, is alive and well in Barcelona. Flamenco shows are a passionate intersection of music, dance, and emotion, and watching one is an experience to have at least once in a lifetime.

And now you’re in the right place to tick that off the bucket list. Several venues across Barcelona host nightly flamenco performances. Tablao Cordobés on La Rambla is one of the most famous, offering a traditional experience with some of the best dancers and musicians in the city. For a more intimate setting, Palau Dalmases – set in a 17th century palace in El Born – hosts smaller, atmospheric performances that are equally mesmerizing.

Insider’s tip: Some flamenco shows offer dinner packages, where you can enjoy tapas or a full meal before or after the performance. If you’re struggling to fit dinner and flamenco together, then join them up in your evening itinerary.

5. Take in the view from a rooftop bar

Barcelona’s skyline is a fine sight to behold, especially at night, and what better way to enjoy it than from a rooftop bar with a cocktail or mocktail in hand? Many of the city’s hotels and restaurants have stylish rooftop terraces that offer panoramic views of iconic landmarks like the Sagrada Família, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Montjuïc hill.

During the summer months, these rooftop bars often host DJ sets, making them the perfect spot to start or end your night out in style.

Insider’s tip: Some of the best rooftop bars include Hotel Pulitzer, located near Plaça Catalunya, which offers a laid-back vibe with live music. For a more ‘quiet luxury’ experience, head to 1881 per Sagardi, the rooftop of the Museum of the History of Catalonia, where you can enjoy craft cocktails while gazing at the Port Vell marina.

6. Party at Barceloneta’s beach clubs

Barcelona’s beachside nightlife is legendary, and no mention of its nocturnal affairs would be complete without talking about the beach clubs at Barceloneta. This area is home to some of the city’s best-known venues, where the party continues well into the early hours of the morning.

Clubs like Opium, Pacha, and Shôko are located right along the beach, offering first-line views of the Mediterranean Sea. These venues attract both locals and international crowds, with world-class DJs spinning the latest tunes. After dancing the night away, you can take a walk of shame along the beach and watch the sunrise.

Barceloneta beach – with the W hotel in the distance

Insider’s tip: If you’re looking for something a little more relaxed, there are plenty of beach bars (known as “chiringuitos”) where you can enjoy a refreshment with the sound of the waves in the background. These little bars are a laid-back alternative to the high-energy beach clubs. We suggest you take a short stroll along to the new Balcon Gastronomico where new bars and restaurants are opening up.

7. Catch a night game

For football fans, catching a night game to watch FC Barcelona is an unmissable experience. The atmosphere is electric, with fans passionately supporting one of the world’s most revered football clubs. Even if you’re not a die-hard football enthusiast, the experience of being at an erupting match under the stadium lights is hard to beat.

Make sure to check the schedule ahead of time, as FC Barcelona often plays evening games, especially in the Champions League.

Nevertheless, Barcelona’s famous Camp Nou stadium – the largest in Europe by capacity – is currently undergoing refurbishments. The stadium should be fully operational again for the 2026-27 season, with an increased capacity to fit over 100,000 fans. Meanwhile, you can cheer on Barcelona at their temporary home: the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic.

Insider’s tip: If you can’t make it to a match, you can also take an evening tour of the Camp Nou museum, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at the history and legacy of the club.

8. Enjoy a late-night stroll along La Rambla

La Rambla, the infamous tree-lined boulevard, is bustling with activity day and night. While it can be crowded with tourists during the day, it takes on a different vibe at night. Street performers, artists, and vendors line the street. Not only that, the bottom of La Rambla has recently been extended to almost reach the sea and is now a nicer, more spacious place to saunter down.

Insider’s tip: At night, La Rambla is a decent place for international-people-watching or grabbing a drink at one of the many cafés that line the boulevard. But If you’re in the mood for something a little more special, step into La Boqueria Market. Inside, you’ll find some of the city’s best tapas bars and restaurants, like Direkte Boqueria and El Quim de La Boqueria.

9. Unwind with an evening spa experience

After a day of sightseeing, why not relax and unwind at one of Barcelona’s luxurious spas? Many spas in the city offer evening appointments, allowing you to indulge in a rejuvenating experience after a long day.

Insider’s tip: The Aire de Barcelona is one of the best in town and popular for its atmospheric, candlelit thermal baths, inspired by ancient Roman and Moorish traditions. It’s a top spot to relax before heading out to enjoy Barcelona’s nightlife and massages are also available. Book ahead though as only limited numbers of people are allowed in at one point, so as to preserve your tranquility.

The Aire spa in Barcelona – source: beaire.com

The America’s Cup is one of oldest trophies in international sport, with a history dating back to 1851. Named after the schooner “America,” which won the inaugural race around the UK’s Isle of Wight, the Cup has since become the pinnacle of yacht racing, attracting the world’s finest sailors, and their state-of-the-art sailing technology.

Over the decades, the America’s Cup has not only been a test of skill but also a showcase for maritime innovation and a battleground for national pride.

The evolution of the America’s Cup

In the beginning, the America’s Cup was a straightforward challenge between yacht clubs, with the defender hosting the race and the challenger coming from another country. The New York Yacht Club (NYYC) dominated the event for 132 years, defending the Cup 24 times until 1983 when the Royal Perth Yacht Club’s Australia II ended their streak. This victory marked a turning point, introducing a more competitive edge.

Since then The Cup has evolved tremendously. The yachts have transformed from traditional mono-hulls to the high-speed, foiling catamarans and monohulls of today, capable of reaching speeds over 50 knots (nearly 60 mph). These technological advancements have made the races more thrilling and spectator-friendly, drawing larger audiences both at the Cup and through global broadcasts.

Nowadays, the America’s Cup is becoming a showcase for sustainability and the blue economy, too.

The 2024 America’s Cup in Barcelona

The 37th edition of the America’s Cup, takes place from the 22nd August until October 2024, in Barcelona, Spain. This marks a return to Europe following the 2007 event in Valencia – just 350 km along the coast.

Barcelona is a picturesque yet practical location for this prestigious event. The city’s natural harbor and favorable sailing conditions make it an ideal sailing site. Barcelona’s well accustomed infrastructure and hospitality industry are safe hands to handle the massive influx of visitors. There’s also the local enthusiasm for sailing and sports, which will add zest to the thrill of the races.

New developments in Barcelona for 2024

The America’s Cup will be viewed by over 1 billion people worldwide but it will also bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to Barcelona, alongside the competitors. With that in mind, the city has made major renovations to the city’s port, ahead of the event.

Here’s a summary of five of the new developments that will be on offer for visitors, and the city’s residents – at the event and for years to come.

La Rambla to the sea – La Rambla is being linked to the port beyond, meaning the famous thoroughfare will be pedestrianized all the way down to the sea. While this won’t quite be ready for the event, the major part will be completed – and the port area at the bottom of La Rambla has been renovated.

Balcon Gastronomico – a remodeling of the restaurant area at the city’s marina. The area was nice enough before but will now be a world-class foodie hub with sea views. Some of the new restaurants look spectacular and will be a fitting addition to a city that’s already home to the world’s best restaurant and world’s best bar!

Virtual image of the restaurant ‘El Tribut’, which will soon open in the port’s new gastronomic hub – source: Estudi Bonjoch

New Mirador building – the port renovations for the America’s Cup will mostly improve existing port buildings, such as the Barcelona Aquarium. But a new building that’s being created is an elegant lookout point at the edge of Barcelona’s port. It’s the reward after a walk along a brand new pedestrianized walkway.

Convenient water ferries – these will operate between La Rambla and Barcelona’s seafront. Not only are they convenient – significantly cutting down an awkward journey – but they’re zero emissions. Book your tickets here.

The city’s best at Timeout Market – a curation of the city’s best restaurants, bars and chefs, all under one roof. Modeled on the famous Timeout market in Lisbon. This has been opened in parallel with a remodeling of the city’s Maremagnum shopping mall.

Who’s competing for the 2024 America’s Cup?

The 2024 America’s Cup is set to be a mediterranean-infused showcase of pioneering maritime technology and fierce competition. Teams from six countries will compete in state-of-the-art AC75 foiling monohulls, which represent the pinnacle of modern yacht design. Here are some quick stats about these amazing yachts:

Hull length: 20.7m

Mast height: 26.5m

Weight: 6.5 tons

Crew: 8 people

Maximum speed: 50 +kn

These vessels dare to defy gravity as they lift above the water on hydrofoils. Their elite performance and agility compared to normal boats, is like F1 cars versus those on roads.

Leading the competition is the current defender, Emirates Team New Zealand. Challenging them are five aspiring teams that’ll present tough opposition – most of them from Europe.

🇮🇹 Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli from Italy

🇬🇧 INEOS Britannia, from the UK

🇨🇭 Alinghi Red Bull Racing, from Switzerland

🇺🇸 NYCC American Magic, from the USA

🇫🇷 Orient Express Racing Team, from France

Each team will bring their unique brand of strategy, engineering, and sailing prowess, to the Mediterranean.

And, yes, you may have noticed that despite the America’s Cup being in Barcelona – there is no Spanish home team involved! A shame but then, despite leading the world in food and football and plenty of other things, Spain can’t be the best in the world at everything…

There’s no better time to visit Barcelona’s port

With its sun-drenched streets and distinct culture, it’s not always necessary to hop into a taxi or hail an Uber when in Barcelona. They’re more expensive, add to already congested roads, and contribute to unwanted fumes.

Whether you’re gliding through historic neighbourhoods on a Segway, strolling past Gaudí’s masterpieces, or cycling along the beachfront, there are plenty of low-emissions options to get you from point A to point B. Why not embrace sustainable travel and keep your carbon footprint light?

From bustling markets like the Mercat de Sant Antoni to the serene paths of Montjuïc, we encourage you to travel responsibly.

We dive into some of the best ways to see this stunning city without compromising on the environment.

By foot

This is as low-emissions as it gets.

Walking in Barcelona is the ultimate eco-friendly way to discover the city. With its narrow streets, charming plazas, and wealth of architectural wonders, every step reveals something unknown. Sure, it can be a bit tiring. But it’s also how you stumble upon the hidden gems that you could miss when using other forms of transport.

Most first-timers like to start in the Gothic Quarter, meandering through medieval streets before arriving at the Barcelona Cathedral. From there, head towards El Born for hip boutiques and lively bars. And don’t miss the chance to walk down Passeig de Gràcia, home to Gaudí’s masterpieces, Casa Batlló and La Pedrera.

If you’re feeling energetic, walk up to Park Güell for breathtaking views of the city and more of Gaudí’s creations. Or, take a stroll along the beachfront promenade in Barceloneta, perfect for a quick beer and people-watching.

Walking can be exhausting, but it’s undoubtedly the most rewarding. Just be sure to pack your most comfortable pair of shoes to get you through those daily steps.

By Segway

Yeah, it’s what we do at Barcelona Segway.

But it really is a brilliant way to explore the city, adding a touch of fun to your sightseeing. Since segways are electrically powered, it’s also kind to the environment, producing no harmful exhaust fumes.

Moving through the streets, you’ll cover more ground than on foot while still feeling the breeze and soaking up the atmosphere. Imagine cruising down Via Laeitana or along the kilometres of beach walk on a summer day. Segways are fantastic to share the joy of visiting the Catalan capital with friends and/or family.

Plus, with professional guides to show you around and ensure your safety, you can relax and enjoy the ride. Our tours are designed to be both informative and entertaining, with insider tips and fascinating stories.

By bike or eBike

Then you’ve got bicycles – a trend which started in Barcelona long before the last pandemic.

With over 200 kilometres of dedicated bike lanes, you can pedal through the different neighbourhoods with ease and safety. Whether you choose a traditional bicycle or an eBike, you’ll find that cycling offers a perfect blend of exercise and exploration.

EBikes are especially handy for tackling the city’s hills – pretty much anything north of Avinguda Diagonal – where you can be rewarded with stunning panoramic views.

Cycling not only reduces your carbon footprint but also lets you experience the city at your own pace, making spontaneous stops at charming cafes or hidden courtyards. So, hop on one and let Barcelona unfold around you, one pedal stroke at a time.

By metro and train

Barcelona’s underground marvels, the metro and FGC (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya), offer another low-emissions way to traverse this city. With over 160 stations scattered across 12 metro and FGC lines, getting from the historic El Raval to the tech hubs of Sant Martí is a breeze.

The metro, managed by TMB, is quite impressive. If you think of strike-ridden France and Italy, you realize that not all Mediterranean nations can boast of the punctuality, reliability, and relative cleanliness of their underground trains. With the metro zipping through tunnels every few minutes, it’s often the go-to option for residents and tourists. Most of the fleet runs on electricity, contributing to a greener Barcelona with every ride.

Simultaneously, there’s the FGC network of both commuter trains and urban lines. It basically extends the reach to the surrounding Catalan region, seamlessly connecting the urban core of Barcelona with the outer suburbs and other picturesque towns. The FGC lines are known for their cleanliness and comfort, making them a favourite among commuters and day-trippers.

By bus

And finally, there’s the bus network. With over 1,000 buses crisscrossing the city on more than 100 lines, getting around has never been easier—or greener.

The commitment to sustainability shines through with a modern, low-emission fleet, including electric and hybrid buses that help keep the city’s air cleaner and fresher. Not only do they cut down on emissions, but they’re also a quieter and smoother ride for folks to enjoy.

The purchase of 88 new electric buses for 2024 underscores the city’s dedication to expanding its climate-friendly fleet. Whether you’re hopping on a local bus to the Gothic Quarter or catching a ride to Camp Nou, you’ll find the buses frequent, reliable (99% of the time!), and an excellent way to soak in the sights without contributing to pollution.

The Aerobús network, whisking travellers from El Prat Airport to the city centre in a jiffy, is one not to miss either. In line with the rest of the system, these blue buses run on low-emission fuels to reduce their carbon footprint. The best part? They operate every 5 to 10 minutes, ensuring you never have to wait long to start your adventure.

You see. There are plenty of budget-friendly, efficient (and low emissions!) alternatives to taxis, Ubers, and the like.

While you’re planning your next vacation to Barcelona, remember to book a Segway tour with us! It’s a low emissions way to see some of the city’s top attractions.

Even when you think you’ve seen it all, you haven’t.

Famous for its stunning architecture, delicious tapas, and vibrant energy, Barcelona still has plenty to offer beyond the obvious. Icons like Park Guëll, the Sagrada Familia, and La Rambla are timeless favorites, but the city’s vastness and diversity mean there’s always something different to visit.

We’re here to show some hidden gems, whether it’s your first trip – or fifth – to the Catalan capital.

Fundació Joan Miró

Cost: €14 regular ticket

District: Sants-Montjuïc

Depending on your knowledge of Spanish art, you might be surprised to see this take the top spot on our list.

Maybe it’s its location (higher up on Montjuïc hill), or the simple fact that he isn’t Gaudi. But the Joan Miró Foundation is a spot where you won’t bump into the crowds of downtown Barcelona. If you didn’t know, Joan Miró was a Catalan artist known for combining abstract art and surrealism.

The foundation, established by the artist himself, opened to the public on June 10, 1975. The museum houses around 10,000 of Miró’s works, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, stage designs, and carpets. Be sure to check out the Mercury Fountain, and the colorful sculptures displayed around the rooftop terrace.

Sitting in Barcelona’s burgeoning arts and tech hub, you’ll find the newest museum by Fundació Vila Casas, which opened in 2009.

Its exterior is as urban-industrial as can be, featuring stark concrete, sharp angles, and rusty iron sculptures. The museum showcases over 300 works from the 1960s to today, exclusively featuring artists born or residing in Catalunya. Each artist is given a three-walled space to display their work, highlighting the different styles and media they use.

They also host regular temporary exhibitions, where the chosen artist and his/her works often carry a strong political, social, or artistic message.

Can Framis was originally a late 18th-century factory that belonged to the Framis family. Now, it’s a tribute to the area’s industrial heritage.

Visiting a hospital might not be on your vacation to-do list. But don’t worry, this one isn’t in operation anymore.

Recinte Modernista Sant Pau is an art-nouveau gem by Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. It housed the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau from 1916 to 2009 and earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1997.

By the late 19th century, the old Hospital de la Santa Creu in the Raval neighborhood was outdated and lacking in space. This prompted an ambitious project driven by the latest advancements in health and hygiene.

Unlike many other attractions, it’s a lot less crowded. Here you can peacefully marvel at beautiful architectural details, intricate mosaics, and tranquil gardens.

Casa Vicens, Gaudí’s first major project, stands out with its unique Mudéjar style, blending Spanish and Arabic influences. Built between 1883 and 1885, this luxurious summer house was commissioned by the wealthy trader Manuel Vicens i Montaner. Back then, Gràcia was a lush, sparsely populated area.

Despite its UNESCO World Heritage status since 2005, you won’t find long queues here. It’s a great way to explore Gaudí’s early design principles and an intriguing, lesser-known landmark for visitors. But heads up: it’s €4 more expensive if you buy your ticket upon arrival.

After exploring Casa Vicens, take a stroll through the Gràcia neighborhood. You’ll find charming plazas, lively vermouth bars, independent boutiques, specialty coffee joints, and the Mercat de la Llibertat.

For a peaceful afternoon, head to the Botanical Garden of Barcelona on Montjuïc. This green haven offers plenty of pathways to get lost in while learning about diverse flora.

Just be sure to set aside enough time to explore all 14 hectares of space. It’s one of the city’s largest parks. Established in 1999, the garden is home to hundreds of plant species from regions like Southern Australia, the coast of Chile, California, South Africa, and the Mediterranean. In essence, environments that all share a climate similar to Barcelona’s.

More than beautiful flowers, the garden plays a crucial role in conservation and research. As you wander through, you’ll appreciate the efforts to protect endangered species and promote sustainability. And as the seasons change, you’ll get a different experience each time.

Montjuïc

Sure, we’ve highlighted some specific sights, but let’s talk about Montjuïc as a whole, because you can spend a whole day here.

Located in southwest Barcelona, the hill has stunning views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea, along with various attractions and parks worth visiting.

It’s an ideal spot to escape the hustle and bustle. While the castle, fountains, and cable cars are its more popular highlights, the cemetery in particular is a hidden gem. It serves as the resting place for many victims of Franco’s regime, but with scenic views across the port. If anything, it almost resembles a beautiful park with numerous sculptures and angels.

In the summer, the castle becomes a large outdoor concert venue and cinema on some evenings. Featuring a mix of classics and new movies shown in their original language, there’s something for every cinephile.

Old Town Sarrià

Cost: free

For a taste of local life, head to Old Town Sarrià. This pedestrian friendly ‘hood offers plenty of interesting shops and cafés, along with some minor sites of interest. As an upper-middle-class area, it’s also very safe.

The old part of the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district, with its charming squares and main street, Carrer Major, reflects its history. Nearly every building hints at its origins as one of the most prosperous village on the Barcelona plain. Once independent, it was annexed by Barcelona in 1921. You can still find some of the oldest structures, such as the former town hall in Plaça del Consell de la Vila.

For literature enthusiasts, here are some must-see stops.

Yes, another hill has made it to our list of least touristy places to see.

It’s where you go if you want to get away from the hordes of people and constant noise. Plus, it’s great for nature lovers. Stroll along the panoramic Carretera de les Aigües, a path that’s mostly flat with breathtaking views. Or, venture further up the mountain for a hike.

But if you’re really looking for some alone time, steer clear of the amusement park, which is also situated there. You’ll easily recognize it by the iconic, rainbow-colored ferris wheel perched at the top.

Barcelona’s charm draws in people from all corners, but its popularity already posed challenges with over-tourism pre-pandemic. Now, as more and more flock back, it’s crucial to explore responsibly, ensuring the city’s preservation for future visitors and liveability for its residents.

Dive into our travel tips to be a conscious tourist and some sustainable activities to get up to while in Catalonia’s capital.

1. Visit during an off-peak season

Barcelona is one of Europe’s top hot spots. Last year alone, the city saw over 12 million tourist arrivals.

If you’re planning a visit, whether it’s your first or not, might we suggest aiming for the quieter months? Skip the hustle and bustle from May to August and opt for fall, early spring, or even winter.

As summers get hotter thanks to extreme climate change, avoiding the peak season can be a very smart move. September offers a noticeably more relaxed vibe, with temperatures still pleasant enough to enjoy the beach and the outdoors. You might even catch a festival, but read up on those over here. And if you didn’t know, November to April is calçot season! So for anyone who’s a serious foodie, this typical Catalan dish is a must-try.

Experiencing the city when it’s not overflowing with folk can be a game-changer. Whether you stroll the streets in December or March, you’ll notice the contrast: lighter crowds, better hotel deals, and probably happier locals. It’s a win-win.

Barcelona is known for its mild temperatures all year round.

2. Discover options for sustainable accommodation

You can interpret sustainable accommodation in one of two ways. First, eco or green hotels (certified, if possible). Second, those that are ideally locally-owned or independent.

With millions flocking to Barcelona each year, finding a good place to stay is becoming a real challenge. Add to that the fact that many are taking advantage of sites like Airbnb to rent out extra rooms or spare apartments. In 2017, it was reported that as many as 50,000 beds were being rented illegally. With stricter laws coming in, the situation is supposed to get better, but it’s had a pretty negative impact on residents. Just google “Barcelona housing crisis”.

That said, some of our favorite Catalan-owned properties are Hotel Brummell (in Poble Sec), Casa Bonay (in Dreta de l’Eixample), Casa Filomena (in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi), and Yurbban Trafalgar (in El Born).

Casa Bonay: a landmark on Gran Via (there’s also a spectacular bar and cafe inside).

3. Shop from Catalan brands, artisans, and specialty stores

On to the more exciting stuff!

Although not a fashion capital like Paris or Milan, Barcelona has a wide range of homegrown labels for you to choose from. Sure, you’ve got internationally-known Spanish brands like ZARA and MANGO. Those lower prices might be tempting, but that’s just fast fashion targeted to the masses. Hardly sustainable in any way.

For stylish women’s clothing, Lola Casademunt. For everyday basics, SHON MOTT. For sneakers and other footwear, Munich. Honestly, the list is longer than you’d think. If you have the chance to befriend a local, ask where they like to source their closet picks!

Then there are the more traditional artisans and workshops mostly located in the central, older neighborhoods. La Manual Alpargetara has been handmaking espadrilles since the 1940s. If you’re not interested in adding to your wardrobe, Cerería Subirà has been handcrafting wax candles since 1741. Herboristeria del Rei is Barcelona’s first herbal shop, which opened its original store in 1818.

The city’s first espadrille company.

4. Dine at local establishments

While you’ll spot the usual fast food suspects, give them a pass. You’re in a country that’s rich in traditional cuisine as well as modern gastronomy. So expose yourself to native flavors. That way, every euro you spend will also go back to the local economy.

The culinary scene in Barcelona is a real treat, and it doesn’t have to break the bank if you steer clear of tourist traps. Catalan restaurants – and Mediterranean dining, in general – are big on seasonal menus, serving up fresh, locally-sourced dishes that also lighten your carbon footprint. For starters, we love Bar del Pla and Bodega Neus. You can check our full roundup of recommendations in this post.

And of course, don’t forget the markets! La Boqueria is iconic, but there are also neighborhood markets like Santa Caterina or Sant Antoni. You’ll find a tasty mix of fruits, cheese, jamón and other cold-cut meats to munch on.

You’ll find the best fresh produce at local markets.

5. Take public transport

This one’s pretty straightforward. Reduce your carbon footprint by taking public transport whenever you can, including to and from the airport – or any main hub! Barcelona is one of the most well-connected cities in the world, internally and externally. Some of its main features include 8 metro lines, over 100 bus lines (not even counting the night ones), and two tram networks.

Road congestion is bad enough, so do your part as a short-term guest and reduce your emissions contribution while you’re there.

Reach any corner of the city with ease. By bus, metro, tram, and more.

6. Sit back and relax in a park

Parks and green spaces are crucial for urban environments. They’re a setting for both physical activity and a mental pause.

In a bustling metropolis like Barcelona, they provide a moment of tranquility amid the hustle. Take a stroll or jog through any of the city’s green havens to connect with nature, recharge your batteries from all the sightseeing, or simply enjoy the therapeutic benefits of being outdoors.

The Parc del Laberint d’Horta, the oldest in Barcelona, has a great maze for you to lose yourself in. The vast Parc de Cervantes is famed for its abundant roses, which bloom in late spring and summer. And the Jardins de la Tamarita, just by the foot of Avinguda Tibidabo, are a beautiful showcase of how a once-private garden has transformed into a cherished public space for all to enjoy.

Note, they’re all great for people-watching, too.

The hedge maze at the heart of Parc del Laberint d’Horta.

7. Go to a museum for a cultural awakening

People go abroad for many reasons. To study. To say, “I’ve been there”. But also to expose themselves to diverse cultures, to foster understanding, and most often, for personal growth.

Museums are one window to look into the history and art of a given place, offering valuable insights that enrich awareness and heighten appreciation. Like many old European cities, Barcelona doesn’t fall short of museums and sites for you to wander through. Visit any of 12 Gaudi buildings, get a glimpse into monastic life at the Monastery of Pedralbes, or have a history lesson with panoramic views at Montjuïc Castle.

The Joan Miró Foundation is one of many museums sitting around the hill of Montjuïc.

8. A few more bonus tips

Recycle your trash: the city has a robust waste management system. You’ll undoubtedly walk past their massive recycling bins every few blocks or so. Plus, a bounty of your regular ol’ garbage cans. There’s really no excuse to litter.

Be mindful of those living in Barcelona: as welcome as tourists are, imagine having thousands of foreigners passing by the front of your home every day. It’s got to be a bit overwhelming. Be mindful of residents and fellow travelers as you go around. If you’re taking a photo outside, try not to block the sidewalk. If you’ve decided to enjoy a fun night out, avoid getting too noisy or rowdy as you return to the hotel. And please, for everyone’s sake, remember that the street is not a toilet. No exceptions.

These are just some of the many ways you can get the most out of your trip while positively impacting the city and its vibrant community, and engaging in greener or more conscious activities.

While you continue to plan the rest of your vacation, make sure to book a Barcelona Segway Tour! It’s also a sustainable way to see swathes of the city, while keeping emissions as low as possible on an easy-to-ride electric vehicle.

A proud alumna of Barcelona’s Escuela Superior de Diseño (ESDI), MariaRoch offers women’s occasion wear for the elegant dresser. Though born and made in Barcelona, it identifies more with the overall Mediterranean style: stylish but effortless, colorful yet not patterned, timeless, and made with fluid fabrics. Especially characteristic of the brand is the fact that their pieces flatter women of all ages and body types.

Despite having dressed many of Spain’s celebrities and other elites, there’s no air of pompousness or unattainability.

Maria originally started her fashion journey running a multi brand store in the El Born neighborhood, before finally deciding to start her own line. She now has two stores in the city: one dedicated to occasion wear, and the other to bridalwear.

You might be wondering why any brand would take the name of a novel –albeit a classic– featuring a protagonist with an evil alter ego. But the reason behind it is pretty clever.

“The idea is this, we have two lines; the Jekyll and the Hyde. The Jekyll line consists of pieces from our own brand, with very limited units; while the Hyde line consists of pieces that are no longer used, and we give them another chance,” explains Meritxell Teixidó. Meritxell and her daughter, Maria, are the duo behind this local brand.

Their newest store on Carrer de Mallorca is all about sustainability. While they still stock the brand’s own designs, which are produced in small batches to begin with, they’re also promoting secondhand pieces that they’ve restored themselves.

Meritxell and Maria first launched JEKYLL n’ HYDE in Lleida (they come from a long line of tailors), before closing and relocating to Barcelona.

Buff was started because of Joan Rojas’ fervent passion for sports and the outdoors. Seeking a warmer, more protective solution against the elements while cruising the Catalan country roads on his motorcycle, Joan eventually created the brand’s iconic tubular.

From there, they’ve gone on to develop a range of accessories: caps, hats, headbands, balaclavas, and more. Each is designed to make the adventures of sports and outdoor enthusiasts more comfortable and stylish.

Similar to some others on this list, BUFF also uses business as a force for good. They produce locally at their in-house factory, making use of renewable energy, and natural and/or recycled materials.

There are various locations around Barcelona’s beachfront where you can practice paddle surfing. You can either rent a paddle board or purchase your own. If you decide on the second option, you can purchase an inflatable paddle surf board because it is free to transport and you can use the typically included backpack to ride a motorcycle with it. This board has the excellent advantage of being portable, as it can be taken to many different places. Here are our options for beaches where you can practice paddle surfing in Barcelona.

Barceloneta Beach

Hundreds of people arrive to one of the busiest beaches in Barcelona from throughout the world to take advantage of the sun, waves, and sand. You may also engage in a range of water sports, such as paddle surfing. In addition, Barceloneta offers a variety of excellent paddle surfing courses, or if you forgot your board at home, you can easily rent one. Paddle surfing is a fantastic water sport.

It is the perfect place to practice paddle surfing as a family, with kids, or by yourself to take in the sea and breeze because of its generally quiet waves. Remember that because it is Ciutat Vella’s most visited beach, it gets very busy.
