Olympic Segway Tour

Opened in 1991, the Port Olímpic hosted the sailing competition during the Barcelona Olympic Games. It is located on the southern end of the area that was most regenerated by the urban renewal program that was realised for the Olympics.

The neighbourhood around the Port Olímpic was transformed completely and has since been called “”Parc de Mar”” or “”Villa Olímpica del Poblenou””. Here, you will also find two of Barcelona’s most popular beaches nearby – the city beach “”La Barceloneta”” and the “”Platja de la Nova Icària””.

In contrast to the the central theme of the visit to the Port Olímpic, the second part of this Barcelona city tour takes us to the Parc de la Ciutadella, which offers significant historical sites from as far back as the late middle ages.

The Parc de la Ciutadella is named after a citadel which was built in the early 18th century, and was the biggest fortress in Europe at the time. However, because the inhabitants of Barcelona saw the fortress as a symbol of oppression by the Spanish central government, the citadel of the Parc de la Ciutadella was destroyed and rebuilt several times during the power struggles between the Spanish and the Catalan government.

The citadel was finally demolished in the late 19th century. But there are three architectural remainders that still exist today: The arsenal, now the parliament of Catalunya, the church, and the former governor’s palace.
