Must-have travel apps for tourists in Barcelona

Barcelona welcomes millions of visitors each year – will you be among them in 2019? This year has already been one to remember, and there will be lots more to do and see throughout the year.

Looking to make the most of your smartphone and find the apps for your Barcelona trip? Here’s a closer look at the must-have travel apps for Barcelona in 2019.

Best Apps for Your Barcelona Trip 2019

1. Get around with Citymapper

When it comes to Barcelona free apps don’t get better than this. Citymapper is a must-have application for your trip. The high-quality app offers a deeper and more targeted experience when compared to Google Maps, providing a more accurate experience for Barcelona.

You’ll also find that the transport recommendations are very accurate here and the app arguably does a better job of letting you know what’s around you in terms of attractions and dining opportunities.

Get the app on Android
Get the app on iOS

2. Hail cabs with mytaxi

Uber and Lyft are the taxi apps of choice for many European cities, but Barcelona has broken the trend here. Instead, Barcelona’s residents and visitors rely upon the mytaxi app. This high-quality application offers all the functionality that you expect from a ride-hailing app, but it connects you to Barcelona’s network of licensed taxis.

Using this app, you can get a taxi at the push of a button and also schedule your trips. This is the perfect app if you’re looking to get around the city in a hurry to make a reservation or get somewhere a little further afield.

Get the app on Android
Get the app on iOS

3. Navigate public transport with TMB App

Barcelona is a very green city and it boasts a sophisticated transport network. Trams, buses, and metro carriages work in perfect harmony to ferry people throughout the city. Intimidated by these network links? You don’t have to be with the TMB App.

There’s nothing more dreaded in the world of transport apps – the public transport app. These are traditionally poorly executed, but this application is offered by city council and it makes getting around the city a breeze. You can plan your trips and see which lines and buses you need to take, placing all of Barcelona’s transportation network at your fingertips.

Get the app on Android
Get the app on iOS

4. Get amazing restaurant discounts with TheFork

There are more than 10,000 restaurants in Barcelona, so it can be tough to know where to get started. TheFork has emerged as the premier doorway to discovering Barcelona’s culinary scene and it also boasts some delicious offers. You won’t need another restaurants app.

If you are looking for the perfect restaurant to dine with your partner or family or the best restaurant for a business lunch, this is the application to use. You will regularly find great discount offers here, as well as customer reviews that you can sift through to get the inside scoop.

Get the app on Android

5. Rule the beach with iBeach

Barcelona is a very unique European city because it brings together golden beaches with the thrill of city life. You might be tempted to use the weather application on your phone to find out more about the weather at those beaches, but it doesn’t give you the full picture.

If you want to become a true beach expert, you’ll want to download iBeach. This application can give you a fuller idea of the weather you can expect, including important details like wind direction and the intensity of the sun.

Get the app on Android

6. Impress the locals with Google Translate

Did you know that Barcelona is home to a bilingual population? Native residents here speak both Spanish and Catalan (the level of English is generally very high too). If you find that you’re a little lost or confused at any point, you could use the Google Translate app.

This amazing app has been powered up over the years with great features. Now, you can translate text using your smartphone camera and generate very accurate translations using voice-to-text – fun stuff and you’ll be sure to impress!

Get the app on Android

There is a lot to do and see in Barcelona. The Barcelona Official Guide is the official app from the tourist board and it puts all of those activities in the palm of your hand! You will find official maps, essential practical information, and much more.

The app also offers you the chance to pick your favorite activities and generate a tailor-made experience. This is a great app to use when planning your trip and as a reference tool while exploring the city.

Best Kosher Food Restaurants in Barcelona

The Catalan capital has a local but relatively small Jewish community, with estimates placing the figure at between 5,000 and 15,000. This small number means that it can, unfortunately, be difficult for visitors to find great kosher food in Barcelona.

But it is out there! In this post, we are going to share the top 5 kosher food restaurants in Barcelona to help you get some delicious food while you are in the sunny city.

Where to find kosher food in Barcelona?

1. Delicias Kosher

Where is it? Carrer d’Avinyó 8, 08002 Barcelona
Phone Number: 00 34 932 50 33 29

Owned by a Jewish family, this restaurant offers traditional kosher food that has an exciting Mediterranean twist. You will be able to enjoy a huge range of kosher wines, and rest assured while dining on traditional entrees and grilled meats that everything is served under the Kashrut certificate that is issued by the Chief Rabbi of Barcelona.

The kosher restaurant in the Gothic district is often praised for its fantastic customer service and a team that is willing to go above and beyond. This means that whether you’re looking for amazing kosher food in Barcelona or answers to a special request, the hosts will go out of their way to give you the help that you need.

2. Maccabi Restaurant

Where is it? Carrer del Bruc 49, 08009 Barcelona
Phone Number: 00 34 933 17 95 45

Again, everything served in this restaurant is done so under a Kashrut certificate. The building has a very unique history, originally serving as a bread oven in the seventeenth century. Now, the restaurant is a bustling building which offers a wide range of traditional kosher dishes to diners. On the Shabbat, you can also enjoy take away service from the restaurant.

3. Kosher Shaq Shuq Israeli

Where is it? Carrer de Ferran 15, 08002 Barcelona
Phone Number: 00 34 933 18 96 93

This kosher restaurant in Barcelona offers remarkable service and it is located right in the center of the city, just off Las Ramblas. Fresh Mediterranean flavors are on offer at Kosher Shaq Shuq Israeli, and for really reasonable prices. There is a range of delicious meat dishes on offer and the bread is baked on-site, giving a nice homely feel.

In terms of the architecture, the restaurant is nice and open, helping you to enjoy your own space while dining in a wonderful restaurant.

4. Taim Kosher

Where is it? Carrer Cuitat de Granada 44, 08005 Barcelona
Phone Number: 00 34 934 61 96 42

While this isn’t a sit-down restaurant, it does offer a take-away service that brings a range of delicious kosher food right to your door. Again, you will find that the dishes have a Mediterranean twist to them and this can help you to explore more local flavors throughout your trip. Of course, the take-away service means that you have the perfect option for Shabbat.

5. Maoz

Where is it? Carrer de Ferran 13, 08002 Barcelona
Phone Number: 00 34 678 60 49 46

This take-away restaurant is adored by vegans and the Jewish community alike. Part of an Israeli chain, you can rest assured that all of the products there are kosher. The prices are fantastic and the amazing falafel is even better!

There is a self-serve salad and toppings bar too, and we are confident that if you’re looking for a quick bit you’ll fall in love with this place.

Where to buy kosher food in Barcelona for your own creations?

While the choice of kosher restaurants in Barcelona may seem a little underwhelming, you also have the option to of course purchase kosher products in the Catalan capital. Here’s a closer look at some of the places you can do this to create your own flavors and favorite dishes.

1. Isamar Kosher

Where is it? Carrer de l’Avenir 29, 08021 Barcelona

This supermarket also has a wonderful deli available, and you can sample some amazing food there while also enjoying the products from the bakery throughout the day. There is a huge range of kosher products on offer here but given that this is one of the only kosher butchers in the city, the prices can get a little crazy!

With that said, this isn’t a bad option if you are looking for a place to purchase trusted kosher supplies that you can then use at home.

2. BenBen Kosher

Gracia Neighborhood in Barcelona: what to do and what to visit

The neighborhoods of Barcelona treasure a lot of streets, squares and buildings that you can not miss when you come to visit the Catalan capital. Today we are going to spend a day in the Gracia neighborhood in Barcelona, an area with bohemian imprint and artistic and multicultural character.

We’ll go through the main points of interest so that you immerse yourself fully in this neighborhood’s life, a place that once was an independent municipality until the end of the 19th century. The Gracia neighborhood became part of the urban nucleus of Barcelona in 1897, but this place still preserves the magic of the city that one day was, so you will find many cool things to see and do.

Discover the Gracia neighborhood in Barcelona

The squares in the Gracia neighborhood

There are several squares you can find in the neighborhood of Gracia. The most popular is the Plaça de Sol, with terraces and cafes and with a lot of atmosphere during the day and, especially, at night.
Another square, one of the most beautiful, and in which you will also find many people is the Plaça de la Virreina. There you’ll see the parish church of Sant Joan, and even you can dance some swing on Sundays.

An obligatory visit when you are in Gracia neighborhood is the Plaça del Diamant, which conserves an anti-aircraft shelter from the Civil War, the Plaça del Nord or the Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia. Plaça de la Sedeta is currently an active civic center in the neighborhood and a symbol of struggle and neighborhood work since it is located in the old Pujol i Casacuberta factory, known by the name of this square.

The Park Güell

We now move to one of the most emblematic and visited places in Gracia: the Park Güell. This jewel is a work of Antonio Gaudí, and we invite you to walk through each of its corners. Its square is a viewpoint where you can enjoy the spectacular views towards Barcelona and, in the park, you will find nature, art and history.

The construction of the Park Güell began in 1900 and some of its essential spaces are the Escalinata del Dragón (the Stairway of the Dragon), the Sala Hipóstila (the Hypostyle Hall), the Teatro Griego (the Greek Theatre) or the Plaza de la Naturaleza (Nature Square) that is currently under construction, el Pórtico de la Lavandera (the Porch of the Washerwoman) or the Jardines de Austria (Austrian Gardens). You can also enjoy incredible walks along its roads, streets and viaducts.

The Modernist architecture of Gracia

Squares, parks and, also, buildings with history. The Gracia neighborhood is the cradle of some of the most representative modernist buildings of modernist architecture in Barcelona. One of them is the Casa Vicens, the first work of Gaudí and former bourgeois residence. It is located on Carolines Street.

Another beautiful building that you will find on your walk through the neighborhood of Gracia is the Casa Rubinat, of modernist architecture, built by Francesc Berenguer Mestres, the right hand of Gaudí, in 1909. As a curiosity, the project is signed by Joan Rubió i Bellver, since Berenguer was not titled.

The Mercat de la Llibertat (the Freedom Market)

Another modernist building you will have the opportunity to visit in the Gracia neighborhood in Barcelona is the Mercat de la Llibertat (the Freedom Market), located in the homonymous square. The space it occupied since 1888, formerly known as Plaza de la Constitución, was the place where farmers sold their vegetables, vegetables and other products.

Now, you can focus on a whole feast of sounds, smells and colors within a building with iron and work structure, decorated with pieces of wrought iron, which was designed to protect the food and all things that were inside. And if there are not many people or you have time, you can taste some of the foods or dishes that are served in one of the stalls directly in the same market.

The viaduct of Vallcarca

Located in the upper part of Gracia, between the Coll and the Putxet hills, this viaduct is a civil engineering work that was built by architect Miquel Pasqual Tintorer. It was the first time that iron was used with reinforced concrete to cover with cement a construction at the bank of a stream.

With this viaduct the cars and people could move from one side to the other and, in the same way, the neighborhood was opened to the rest of the city, favoring the connections. If you want to enjoy unbeatable views, we invite you to come to visit this point, one of the highest in Barcelona.

The Teatre Més Petit del Món (the Smallest Theatre in the World)

The Gracia neighborhood of Barcelona has the honor to host the smallest theater in the world. It is located on Encarnación Street, number 25, and is located on the ground floor of an old farmhouse from 1890. It was opened to the public in 1999 and, in this place, there are concerts, shows and events, all on a magic stage and in a familiar and cozy environment.

The streets with charm

If you want to walk, Gracia is a beautiful place to do it. Streets are full of magic, and you can still feel the atmosphere of the old town it was once ago. In many of these streets, you will be able to see fun traffic signs decorated with stickers.

On Verdi Street, for example, you will find a wide variety of restaurants with typical food from nearly every country. And if you want to change and visit the district of L’Eixample, you can walk along the Paseo de Sant Joan (last section of it) which connects both areas of Barcelona and was opened in 1929.

Squares, buildings, streets and parks. The neighborhood of Gracia in Barcelona is a meeting place where you will find culture, tradition and art to offer you an unforgettable day by visiting one of the most iconic districts in the city.

To learn more about the history of La Barceloneta, we moved to the 15th century, when the breakwater of the port was built on a place that the land started to win the sea.

In October 1718 the Captain-General Marquis of Castel-Rodrigo established the creation of the neighborhood of the Beach (Barrio de la Playa). The goal was that people who had lost their homes after the demolition of buildings to build the citadel could have a new home. The project was entrusted to the military engineer Pròsper Verboom.

However, a new project (and definitive) began to be devised in 1749. As the website of the Barcelona City Council tells us, in this case, it was intended to order the constructions of the Arenal, to control the population militarily and to alleviate the situation of lack of housing in the walled city of Barcelona.

La Barceloneta is considered one of the best examples of Baroque urbanism in the whole Peninsula.

The activities of its inhabitants were closely linked to the sea, especially since the year 1754 the fishermen began to arrive at this site.

Until the mid-nineteenth century fishing and port activities were the predominant here. If you walk through the neighborhood, you can feel this marine origin on its streets. Although the neighborhood has been modernized by introducing new services, the truth is that this magical charm still exists.

What to do and visit in La Barceloneta neighborhood

Enjoy La Barceloneta Beach

The Barceloneta Beach has a central location and is easily accessible, which is why it is one of the favorites of locals and tourists who come to the city. It is one of the oldest in Barcelona and also, perhaps, the most famous.

Walk on the streets

If you want to move to that Barceloneta of yesteryear you just have to walk through its narrow streets. There you will see old buildings and establishments that still maintain the decoration of 200 years ago.

If you walk to the sea, you will observe that step by step the neighborhood is becoming more modern.

Visit the history museum, the Museu d’Història de Catalunya

Created in 1996 by the Government of the Generalitat of Catalonia, this museum presents a collection of documents and objects that will bring you closer to the history of the Catalan people and their culture.

Go to the Clock Tower (Torre del Reloj)

The Clock Tower is considered the oldest building in the neighborhood. It was built in the year 1772 to become the lighthouse to guide ships on the darkest nights.

Towards the middle of the 19th century, specific improvements were made in the port of Barcelona, so the lighthouse ceased to be an indispensable element, but it was not demolished. However, a clock was placed in the highest part.

Go shopping in the Maremagnum

The Maremagnum is a shopping center that is located on the pier of Spain, at the Old Port of Barcelona. If you want to go shopping this will be your chosen place.

The Barceloneta park and the Torre de les Aigües

The Barceloneta park becomes a link between the sea area and the Ronda Litoral. In it, you will find a wide variety of plant species and you will see the Torre de les Aigües, a modernist building that was designed in 1907 by the architect Josep Domènech i Estapà.

Buildings in La Barceloneta area

During your tour of La Barceloneta, you will come across several buildings that are worth enjoying. For example, the Casa Josep Torras (Baluard Street 6), a house of Josep Graner that has been restored and where you can see sgraffito full of color; the
Casa Magi (Calle Balboa 14), with a façade in pale pink and neoclassical style, or the Esteve Cortada building (Marquès de la Quadra 3 street), in this case, yellow and decorated with plant motifs.

Enjoy the Japanese cuisine in the Catalan capital

The borders of the world blur and change constantly. Due to globalization, there is no need to travel to Italy to eat a good pizza or to Greece to eat an authentic moussaka. Today we can taste dishes from other countries and exotic delicacies in our own city.

Among the different gastronomic cultures of the world, the Japanese cuisine is one of the most spread, especially in large cities such as Madrid, Berlin or New York. Their cuisine is internationally known and critically acclaimed by both food critics and regular people. The interest for the culture and the oriental gastronomy is growing day by day and its presence is so extended that the sushi has become not only an appreciated Japanese specialty but a popular choice for delivery or fast food.

But, where does sushi come from? Sushi is a word of Japanese origin, the result of the union between two words: vinegar and shi-meshi (rice). Sushi could literally be translated as “vinegary rice”. It’s funny, though, that the sushi it’s not originally a Japanese recipe, since it was born in China as a fish conservation technique, like smoking it or the conservation in salt. The rice and fish were cooked and left to ferment and, after a certain amount of time, the fish was consumed alone. Still far away from the sushi we eat today.

Because of the Chinese immigration, this method of conservation was spread through different countries, Japan among them. Plus, some changes in Japan political and administrative organization, affected the supply of rice, making it the number one preservative in the country. In the mid-seventeenth century, Dr. Matsumoto Yoshiichi decided to add vinegar to rice for conservation. A few years later, people began to roll up the ingredients for their consumption. However, the famous cook Yohei Hanaya was the first to use raw fish at the end of the 18th century, since until that time they used cooked, marinated or roasted fish. The first sushi rolls were born. After the Second World War, in the middle of the 20th century, the first sushi joints appeared, in the form of restaurants and mobile kiosks. Since then and to this day, the openings of sushi-based restaurants and Japanese food have not stopped.

The Catalan capital is a city full of international culinary choices, especially in downtown areas. There are hundreds of sushi restaurants in Barcelona: some of them are buffets, others are Chinese restaurants trying to pass as Japanese and others, the few, are real Japanese restaurants. It’s very hard to spot or distinguish them from the fake ones. Usually you can get a big clue by checking up their menu; if they offer a mix of Asian food, it probably won’t be a real Japanese restaurant.

Since we want to help you find the best sushi in town, here you have our recommendations!

Top sushi restaurants in Barcelona

1. KIBUKA

Where is it? Carrer Goya, 9
www.kibuka.com

The Japanese restaurant Kibuka is the project of 3 Catalans who decided to fulfill the dream of opening a sushi restaurant in Barcelona. Kibuka has two sushi restaurants in Barcelona, just in the Gràcia district: the best known is in the upper part of Verdi street, and the second is in Goya street, very close to the Plaça de la Vila. Both restaurants offer a menu of oriental dishes with a very good quality and price ratio. Both restaurants stand out for having open kitchens where the chefs cut your sushi in the spot. In addition, they also have an extensive variety of makis, noodles and other Japanese specialties. But Kibuka is not a conventional Japanese restaurant, and you can feel it and taste it in their food, which has Latin and Asian influence.

2. NOMO

Where is it? C/ Gran de Gracia, 13
www.gruponomo.com/restaurantes/nomo

Nomo is more than a restaurant: it’s a Mediterranean-feeling Asian-cuisine tavern. It was born in 2007 because of the work of two Catalonian brothers who joined forces with the Japanese chef Naoyuki Haginoya. They decided to open a Japanese restaurant with a very exclusive concept: Asian gastronomy and Japanese culture but deeply rooted in Catalan tradition. It quickly became a huge success, so they opened three more restaurants, one of them for take-away. Nowadays, thanks to its key location in the center of the city, its quality ingredients and their original cooking techniques, NOMO has become one of the most popular sushi joints in Barcelona.

3. MACHIROKU

Where is it? Carrer Moles 21
www.facebook.com/pages/Machiroku/

Machiroku is a small and modest sushi restaurant in Barcelona that has been running for more than seven years. If you are looking for a place to taste quality sushi at a good price, Machiroku is the place for you. Although sushi is the main star of the menu, in Machiroku they also offer other highly recommended dishes such as yakisoba noodles, ramen or popular gyozas. In addition, all the products are homemade, fresh and delicious. If you want to try for the first time the sushi, or you don’t have a lot of experience in this type of cuisine, Machiroku would be a great beginning. The Machiroku staff is very nice and helpful, and they will guide you through this gastronomic trip. We also recommend you their daily menus.

4. PARCO

Where is it? Passeig de Gràcia, 119
www.facebook.com/pages/Parco

This restaurant has a great reputation in Barcelona. The menu offers sushi, sashimi and other premium Japanese dishes in a dreamlike environment that stands out for its aesthetics and its warm and intimate atmosphere. The low light, poufs and wooden tables at ground level are another hallmark of the restaurant that will make you feel like you were in Japan. In addition, it also has an attractive offer of cosmopolitan cocktails and drinks. Our recommendation for this restaurant would be ordering the degustation menu because it includes all types of sushi: Makis, Uramakis, Temakis, Nigiris and more.
