More about the tour

The Parc de la Ciutadella is named after the citadel which was once located in the park. Built in the early 18th century, it was the biggest fortress in Europe at the time.

Among the park’s main attractions is the zoo of Barcelona (once home to the famous Albino Gorilla Snowflake) and the “”Cascada””, a large and impressive fountain designed by the architect Josep Fontsére, with some minor contributions from the young Antoní Gaudí, who later designed Casa Batlló, Casa Milà and of course the iconic Sagrada Familia.

Because the inhabitants of Barcelona saw the fortress as a symbol of oppression by the central Spanish government, the citadel within the Parc de la Ciutadella was destroyed and rebuilt several times during the power struggles between the central Spanish government and the Catalan government.

In the end, the citadel was finally demolished in the late 19th century. However, there are three architectural remainders of the citadel’s former glory that still exist today: The arsenal, which is now the parliament of Catalunya, the church, and the former governor’s palace.

The Parc de la Ciutadella is also home to the museum of natural science and the zoology museum of Barcelona, both pavilions from the 1888 world exhibition.

You will visit all of these places during this beginner’s Segway tour of the Parc de la Ciutadella, in which your guide will tell you facts and stories and recommend things to see and do in the Parc de la Ciutadella and beyond.
