One of Barcelona’s most iconic nighttime spectacles is the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc. Located in the Plaça d’Espanya, this fountain was built in 1929 and has since become a must-see. The Magic Fountain bursts to life with a dazzling light and music show, resplendent with synchronized water jets, colorful lights, and melodies that range from classical to contemporary hits.

The show is free, and it typically runs on Thursday to Sunday nights, making it an ideal activity for those wanting to relax after a day of sightseeing. It’s also a great prelude to an evening spent exploring the rest of Montjuïc Hill, which offers panoramic views of the city.

Insider’s tip: because of recent drought issues in the city, the Magic Fountain isn’t always on and has been switched off for much of 2024. Thankfully, due to the drought easing somewhat, it’s due to make a comeback soon but check ahead rather than turning up and risking the disappointment of a drained fountain.

3. Indulge in nighttime tapas (and pintxos)

No visit to Barcelona would be complete without indulging in its culinary delights, and the city’s tapas scene comes into its own at night. Tapas bars are scattered throughout the city, offering small plates of delicious, flavorful dishes that pair perfectly with a ‘copa de cava’ or a cold cerveza.

Head to areas like El Born, Poble Sec, or Gràcia, where locals and tourists alike fill the streets, hopping from one tapas bar to the next. As well as all the creative tapas on offer, be sure to try classic tapas dishes like patatas bravas (fried potatoes with a piquant tomato sauce) and croquetas (fried croquettes filled with ham, chicken or other fillings).

For a more northern Spanish twist, visit one of Barcelona’s many pintxos bars, where small bites are skewered with toothpicks and displayed on the bar counter. Pintxos are perfect for a cheeky late-night snack while mingling with locals. One popular spot to try is Carrer de Blai, a street in the Poble Sec neighborhood known for its generous parade of pintxos bars.

Insider’s tip: the tapas in Barcelona can be mediocre in the tourist traps. Over at Barcelona Food Experience there’s a handy list of some of the best places. One of our tips is Bar del Pla, in the central Born neighborhood, which hosts a beguiling mix of locals, international visitors, and creative small plates. Note that you’ll almost always need to reserve ahead here, and in the other top places.

4. Experience live flamenco

Flamenco, though originating in southern Spain, is alive and well in Barcelona. Flamenco shows are a passionate intersection of music, dance, and emotion, and watching one is an experience to have at least once in a lifetime.

And now you’re in the right place to tick that off the bucket list. Several venues across Barcelona host nightly flamenco performances. Tablao Cordobés on La Rambla is one of the most famous, offering a traditional experience with some of the best dancers and musicians in the city. For a more intimate setting, Palau Dalmases – set in a 17th century palace in El Born – hosts smaller, atmospheric performances that are equally mesmerizing.

Insider’s tip: Some flamenco shows offer dinner packages, where you can enjoy tapas or a full meal before or after the performance. If you’re struggling to fit dinner and flamenco together, then join them up in your evening itinerary.

5. Take in the view from a rooftop bar

Barcelona’s skyline is a fine sight to behold, especially at night, and what better way to enjoy it than from a rooftop bar with a cocktail or mocktail in hand? Many of the city’s hotels and restaurants have stylish rooftop terraces that offer panoramic views of iconic landmarks like the Sagrada Família, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Montjuïc hill.

During the summer months, these rooftop bars often host DJ sets, making them the perfect spot to start or end your night out in style.

Insider’s tip: Some of the best rooftop bars include Hotel Pulitzer, located near Plaça Catalunya, which offers a laid-back vibe with live music. For a more ‘quiet luxury’ experience, head to 1881 per Sagardi, the rooftop of the Museum of the History of Catalonia, where you can enjoy craft cocktails while gazing at the Port Vell marina.

6. Party at Barceloneta’s beach clubs

Barcelona’s beachside nightlife is legendary, and no mention of its nocturnal affairs would be complete without talking about the beach clubs at Barceloneta. This area is home to some of the city’s best-known venues, where the party continues well into the early hours of the morning.

Clubs like Opium, Pacha, and Shôko are located right along the beach, offering first-line views of the Mediterranean Sea. These venues attract both locals and international crowds, with world-class DJs spinning the latest tunes. After dancing the night away, you can take a walk of shame along the beach and watch the sunrise.

Insider’s tip: If you’re looking for something a little more relaxed, there are plenty of beach bars (known as “chiringuitos”) where you can enjoy a refreshment with the sound of the waves in the background. These little bars are a laid-back alternative to the high-energy beach clubs. We suggest you take a short stroll along to the new Balcon Gastronomico where new bars and restaurants are opening up.

7. Catch a night game

For football fans, catching a night game to watch FC Barcelona is an unmissable experience. The atmosphere is electric, with fans passionately supporting one of the world’s most revered football clubs. Even if you’re not a die-hard football enthusiast, the experience of being at an erupting match under the stadium lights is hard to beat.

Make sure to check the schedule ahead of time, as FC Barcelona often plays evening games, especially in the Champions League.

Nevertheless, Barcelona’s famous Camp Nou stadium – the largest in Europe by capacity – is currently undergoing refurbishments. The stadium should be fully operational again for the 2026-27 season, with an increased capacity to fit over 100,000 fans. Meanwhile, you can cheer on Barcelona at their temporary home: the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic.

In the beginning, the America’s Cup was a straightforward challenge between yacht clubs, with the defender hosting the race and the challenger coming from another country. The New York Yacht Club (NYYC) dominated the event for 132 years, defending the Cup 24 times until 1983 when the Royal Perth Yacht Club’s Australia II ended their streak. The 37th edition of the America’s Cup, takes place from the 22nd August until October 2024, in Barcelona, Spain. This marks a return to Europe following the 2007 event in Valencia – just 350 km along the coast.

New developments in Barcelona for 2024

While this won’t quite be ready for the event, the major part will be completed – and the port area at the bottom of La Rambla has been renovated.
• Balcon Gastronomico – a remodeling of the restaurant area at the city’s marina. The area was nice enough before but will now be a world-class foodie hub with sea views. Some of the new restaurants look spectacular and will be a fitting addition to a city that’s already home to the world’s best restaurant and world’s best bar!

• New Mirador building – the port renovations for the America’s Cup will mostly improve existing port buildings, such as the Barcelona Aquarium. But a new building that’s being created is an elegant lookout point at the edge of Barcelona’s port. It’s the reward after a walk along a brand new pedestrianized walkway.
• Convenient water ferries – these will operate between La Rambla and Barcelona’s seafront. Not only are they convenient – significantly cutting down an awkward journey – but they’re zero emissions. Book your tickets here.
• The city’s best at Timeout Market – a curation of the city’s best restaurants, bars and chefs, all under one roof. Modeled on the famous Timeout market in Lisbon. This has been opened in parallel with a remodeling of the city’s Maremagnum shopping mall.

These vessels dare to defy gravity as they lift above the water on hydrofoils. Their elite performance and agility compared to normal boats, is like F1 cars versus those on roads.

Leading the competition is the current defender, Emirates Team New Zealand. Challenging them are five aspiring teams that’ll present tough opposition – most of them from Europe.

1. Visit during an off-peak season

Barcelona is one of Europe’s top hot spots. Last year alone, the city saw over 12 million tourist arrivals.

If you’re planning a visit, whether it’s your first or not, might we suggest aiming for the quieter months? Skip the hustle and bustle from May to August and opt for fall, early spring, or even winter.

As summers get hotter thanks to extreme climate change, avoiding the peak season can be a very smart move. September offers a noticeably more relaxed vibe, with temperatures still pleasant enough to enjoy the beach and the outdoors. You might even catch a festival, but read up on those over here. And if you didn’t know, November to April is calçot season! So for anyone who’s a serious foodie, this typical Catalan dish is a must-try.

Experiencing the city when it’s not overflowing with folk can be a game-changer. Whether you stroll the streets in December or March, you’ll notice the contrast: lighter crowds, better hotel deals, and probably happier locals. It’s a win-win.

2. Discover options for sustainable accommodation

You can interpret sustainable accommodation in one of two ways. First, eco or green hotels (certified, if possible). Second, those that are ideally locally-owned or independent.

With millions flocking to Barcelona each year, finding a good place to stay is becoming a real challenge. Add to that the fact that many are taking advantage of sites like Airbnb to rent out extra rooms or spare apartments. In 2017, it was reported that as many as 50,000 beds were being rented illegally. With stricter laws coming in, the situation is supposed to get better, but it’s had a pretty negative impact on residents. Just google “Barcelona housing crisis”.

That said, some of our favorite Catalan-owned properties are Hotel Brummell (in Poble Sec), Casa Bonay (in Dreta de l’Eixample), Casa Filomena (in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi), and Yurbban Trafalgar (in El Born).

3. Shop from Catalan brands, artisans, and specialty stores

On to the more exciting stuff!

Although not a fashion capital like Paris or Milan, Barcelona has a wide range of homegrown labels for you to choose from. Sure, you’ve got internationally-known Spanish brands like ZARA and MANGO. Those lower prices might be tempting, but that’s just fast fashion targeted to the masses. Hardly sustainable in any way.

For stylish women’s clothing, Lola Casademunt. For everyday basics, SHON MOTT. For sneakers and other footwear, Munich. Honestly, the list is longer than you’d think. If you have the chance to befriend a local, ask where they like to source their closet picks!

Then there are the more traditional artisans and workshops mostly located in the central, older neighborhoods. La Manual Alpargetara has been handmaking espadrilles since the 1940s. If you’re not interested in adding to your wardrobe, Cerería Subirà has been handcrafting wax candles since 1741. Herboristeria del Rei is Barcelona’s first herbal shop, which opened its original store in 1818.

4. Dine at local establishments

While you’ll spot the usual fast food suspects, give them a pass. You’re in a country that’s rich in traditional cuisine as well as modern gastronomy. So expose yourself to native flavors. That way, every euro you spend will also go back to the local economy.

The culinary scene in Barcelona is a real treat, and it doesn’t have to break the bank if you steer clear of tourist traps. Catalan restaurants – and Mediterranean dining, in general – are big on seasonal menus, serving up fresh, locally-sourced dishes that also lighten your carbon footprint. And of course, don’t forget the markets! La Boqueria is iconic, but there are also neighborhood markets like Santa Caterina or Sant Antoni. You’ll find a tasty mix of fruits, cheese, jamón and other cold-cut meats to munch on.

5. Take public transport

This one’s pretty straightforward. Reduce your carbon footprint by taking public transport whenever you can, including to and from the airport – or any main hub! Barcelona is one of the most well-connected cities in the world, internally and externally. Some of its main features include 8 metro lines, over 100 bus lines (not even counting the night ones), and two tram networks.

Road congestion is bad enough, so do your part as a short-term guest and reduce your emissions contribution while you’re there.

6. Sit back and relax in a park

Parks and green spaces are crucial for urban environments. They’re a setting for both physical activity and a mental pause.

In a bustling metropolis like Barcelona, they provide a moment of tranquility amid the hustle. Take a stroll or jog through any of the city’s green havens to connect with nature, recharge your batteries from all the sightseeing, or simply enjoy the therapeutic benefits of being outdoors.

The Parc del Laberint d’Horta, the oldest in Barcelona, has a great maze for you to lose yourself in. The vast Parc de Cervantes is famed for its abundant roses, which bloom in late spring and summer. And the Jardins de la Tamarita, just by the foot of Avinguda Tibidabo, are a beautiful showcase of how a once-private garden has transformed into a cherished public space for all to enjoy.

Note, they’re all great for people-watching, too.

7. Go to a museum for a cultural awakening

People go abroad for many reasons. To study. To say, “I’ve been there”. But also to expose themselves to diverse cultures, to foster understanding, and most often, for personal growth.

Museums are one window to look into the history and art of a given place, offering valuable insights that enrich awareness and heighten appreciation. Like many old European cities, Barcelona doesn’t fall short of museums and sites for you to wander through. Visit any of 12 Gaudi buildings, get a glimpse into monastic life at the Monastery of Pedralbes, or have a history lesson with panoramic views at Montjuïc Castle.

8. A few more bonus tips

• Recycle your trash: the city has a robust waste management system. You’ll undoubtedly walk past their massive recycling bins every few blocks or so. Plus, a bounty of your regular ol’ garbage cans. There’s really no excuse to litter.
• Be mindful of those living in Barcelona: as welcome as tourists are, imagine having thousands of foreigners passing by the front of your home every day. It’s got to be a bit overwhelming. Be mindful of residents and fellow travelers as you go around. If you’re taking a photo outside, try not to block the sidewalk. If you’ve decided to enjoy a fun night out, avoid getting too noisy or rowdy as you return to the hotel. And please, for everyone’s sake, remember that the street is not a toilet. No exceptions.

These are just some of the many ways you can get the most out of your trip while positively impacting the city and its vibrant community, and engaging in greener or more conscious activities.

There are several entertainment alternatives and attractions around, like volleyball fields and ping pong tables. Remember that because it is Ciutat Vella’s most visited beach, it gets very busy.

Bogatell Beach

Bogatell Beach is renowned for being the most popular and safest beach in Barcelona. Due to its beach break wave pattern, this 700-meter beach is perfect for performing different water activities like surfing and paddle surfing. It’s interesting to note that this beach is particular popular with locals who are in their 30s.

Nova Icària Beach

Mar Bella Beach

For many athletes, young people or students from nearby faculties, this is a very recurring meeting point between them. Due to its location, this beach has less flow of people, making it an ideal area to practice paddle surfing in Barcelona without having so many bathers around. These are only a few of Catalunya’s top surfing locations; there are several more, a little further afield, that provide surfers with amazing waves and a distinctive experience – the Ebro Delta for example. It is crucial to remember that surfing can occasionally be risky, thus it is always advised to proceed with caution and respect for the sea conditions.

La Barceloneta

A very well-liked spot for surfing in Barcelona is the Barceloneta beach. It is undoubtedly the birthplace of surfing in Catalunya. It provides a good number of high-quality left and right peaks. On the sandy bottom, its waves shatter. It requires steady seas.

Particularly in the summer, it’s usually flat. It is relatively protected from north-easterly winds and performs best in north-westerly or westerly breezes. The east-southeast direction of the wave is optimal. The tide has little effect on the swell’s quality.

Caleta de Montgat

Montgat is an exposed beach break with reliable waves. One of the Maresme coast’s most well-liked wave destinations. It provides good waves and functions well in calmer conditions. You can locate tubes even on good days. In close proximity to Barcelona, there are strong, swift waves for surfing.

There is limited protection from crosswinds and the northwest has the best wind direction. The most frequent wave types are wind and short-period swells, with southeasterly winds making for the best wave direction. There are rights and lefts in the beach break able to be surfed at any tides.

Masnou

It is an urban beach of 1 km in length. It is located right next to the breakwater of the marina of Masnou, in the Maresme of Barcelona. It works well in the autumn and winter months. It is a fairly crowded wave, largely because it is located very close to the urban area of Barcelona.

El Masnou is a fairly exposed sandbar. The summer tends to have flat conditions, as in most of the Mediterranean Sea. The best wind direction is from the northwest. The ideal wave direction is from the east southeast. Waves are mostly left-handed and there are good waves at all stages of the tide.

Castelldefels

In the tourist town of Castelldefels, about half an hour from Barcelona, there is a magnificent beach for kiting. Here there is a special kite area where you can kite without getting fined or without ending up crashing your kite into a swimmer. In general, Castelldefels beach is a very suitable kitesurfing spot for those who are just starting out in the sport, although when the wind blows from the east or west, the waves grow and the wind is stronger. As such, you will need to have more skills when handling the kite

The best time for kiting in Castelldefels is the months of April to July. According to the regulations, kitesurfing is prohibited throughout Catalunya from June 1 to September 30 due to the number of bathers. The only exceptions are the special kitesurf spots, which are only three, Castelldefels being the only one in the province of Barcelona. The other 2 places where kitesurfing is allowed are Sant Pere Pescador and Trabucador beach in Sant Carles de la Rapita.

Bogatell Beach

Bogatell beach is probably one of the better beaches in Barcelona for kitesurfing. When the Levante wind blows, kitesurfers congregate at this primary kitesurfing location. What draws a lot of kiters to Boagetell is that the beach is easily reached by car and public transportation. Furthermore, the beach’s northern breakwater creates a few meters of reasonably good freestyle water plate.

Fall and winter are the ideal seasons to go kitesurfing at Playa del Bogatell. But beginners are not advised to use Bogatell beach for kiteboarding. There are breakwaters on every beach in Barcelona, so you have to be skilled at kiteboarding to avoid getting blown into the cement blocks. Moreover, large swells are typically brought on by westerly winds.

Vilassar de Mar / Cabrera de Mar

Located between Mataró and Vilassar de Mar, the Cabrera kitesurf area is only 30 minutes by public transportation and 35 minutes by car from Barcelona. The distance between Cabrera de Mar and Vilassar de Mar beaches is roughly 1000 meters. Sadly, kiteboarding throughout the summer in June to September is restricted at the site.

Its proximity to Barcelona and lack of crowds compared to Castelldefels are further advantages. In Vilassar, there can be up to 50 kites visible on a day with strong winds. Both beaches’ circumstances permit the practice of various styles, including strapless, hydrofoil, freestyle, and freeride. Rainy days may prevent car entry; however, you can park close by and enter on foot.

There are plenty of places to go surfing and kitesurfing are found in Barcelona and surrounding areas. Due to summertime local restrictions, a lot of Barcelona-based surfers and kiters enjoy themselves at the Costa Brava, while others head south. Walk around and enjoy the Christmas decorations

Starting on November 24th, Barcelona will once again deck the streets with millions of lights, igniting the holiday atmosphere in the city. This year, Paseo de Gracia has undergone a total makeover and you will be able to take advantage of the illumination that was first installed in Plaza Catalunya, Gran Via or Aragó Street last year. The busiest shopping streets will also have a number of Christmas trees planted. 

You can enjoy the well-known nativity scene at Plaça de Sant Jaume, and the mayor has promised that this year’s version would be more interactive and audiovisual. The Frederic Mares Museum, the Parish of Our Lady of Betlem, the Palau Mercader, the Museu-Monestir de Pedralbes and the Associació de Pessebristes de Palau-Solità i Plegamans will also have nativity scenes installed, as is tradition.

Christmas in Poble Espanyol

Poble Espanyol will transform into a massive advent calendar from December 3 to December 11; December 17 and 18; December 22 to December 29; and from January 3 to January 8th. The Christmas spirit will enliven the streets of Poble, and you’ll discover a lovely route lined with numerous decorations inspired by holiday wishes and following a similar theme based on letter combinations that create emotive phrases.

Prior to December 24 or beginning on December 26, the children of Barcelona will have the option of delivering their letters to Santa Claus’s residence or one of the Kings. In addition, Christmas in Poble Espanyol will be celebrated at night this year for the first time. Along with Christmas, the magic of music will be added to its daytime programmes. The iconic venue, Vespres de Nadal, will be packed with live Gospel, Blues and Opera performances by well-known groups. These performances will include Christmas-themed variations. Every day will feature new concerts, including Blues Thursdays, Opera Fridays and Gospel Saturdays, all in a distinctive setting with plenty of holiday decorations and magic.

Visit a Christmas Market

There is no Christmas in Barcelona without visiting one of its wonderful markets and enjoying the festive and magical atmosphere that surrounds them. You can buy new tree decorations, some figurines for the Nativity scene, a Flor de Pascua and more. At these markets you can see Christmas fires, lights, shows, concerts, attractions and activities for the whole family.

A very popular place is the Sagrada Familia Christmas Market. This market was born when there was no longer any space in the Santa Llúcia market. It has around fifty stalls including figures from the manger, Christmas trees and plants, decorations, gift items and spaces with food products such as sweet potatoes, chestnuts, nougat and churros. In addition, they also organize workshops so that the neighborhood is filled with the Christmas spirit. Be there from November 27 to December 23.

The Fira de Santa Llúcia is the city’s Christmas market par excellence, not only because it is the oldest in the city, this year being its 236th anniversary, but because it is the most iconic. Located on Avenida de la Catedral, it has 175 stalls full of nativity scenes, trees, crafts and zambombas. Every day, from November 25 to December 23.

On the street is where most people congregate, either because it is customary to do so or because the city hosts an event there. In the case of Barcelona, Montjuïc has served as that space for a while. Atuell Cerámica

The workshops in Atuell are instructed by Olga, Ana Luiza and Brenda. Olga comes from the field of graphic design applied to museum studies. She worked in this sector until she decided to entirely change her career path and focus on ceramics. She went to Germany to work in a craft factory where all kinds of functional items were made on the wheel, painted by hand and then baked with salt, a traditional West German method. 

The team found a small workshop whose proprietor was retiring, and realized that this was an excellent opportunity to purchase it. At the beginning they produced their own work, but more and more people started asking if classes could be taught. Atuell is housed in a modernist building and it is a spacious area with high ceilings and wrought-iron columns. Plants abound and there are other artesan touches all over the place.

Blanca de Gomar, a former graphic designer, had explored ceramics and had fallen in love with it. Consequently, she launched her first shop. Acknowledging that she had been considerably calmer and anxiety-free since then. When she wanted to, she would create pieces and switch to zen mode. Customers at Recrea can embrace their pieces while disengaging from the outside world. There is an overall effort made to project calm and peace in the shop.
