We’re here to show some hidden gems, whether it’s your first trip – or fifth – to the Catalan capital.

Fundació Joan Miró

Depending on your knowledge of Spanish art, you might be surprised to see this take the top spot on our list.

Maybe it’s its location (higher up on Montjuïc hill), or the simple fact that he isn’t Gaudi. But the Joan Miró Foundation is a spot where you won’t bump into the crowds of downtown Barcelona.  If you didn’t know, Joan Miró was a Catalan artist known for combining abstract art and surrealism.

The foundation, established by the artist himself, opened to the public on June 10, 1975. The museum houses around 10,000 of Miró’s works, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, stage designs, and carpets. Be sure to check out the Mercury Fountain, and the colorful sculptures displayed around the rooftop terrace.

The building itself, designed by architect Josep Sert, is an impressive structure and serves some incredible views of the city below.

Museu Can Framis

• Cost: €8 regular ticket
• District: Poblenou

Sitting in Barcelona’s burgeoning arts and tech hub, you’ll find the newest museum by Fundació Vila Casas, which opened in 2009.

Its exterior is as urban-industrial as can be, featuring stark concrete, sharp angles, and rusty iron sculptures. The museum showcases over 300 works from the 1960s to today, exclusively featuring artists born or residing in Catalunya. Each artist is given a three-walled space to display their work, highlighting the different styles and media they use.

They also host regular temporary exhibitions, where the chosen artist and his/her works often carry a strong political, social, or artistic message.

Can Framis was originally a late 18th-century factory that belonged to the Framis family. Now, it’s a tribute to the area’s industrial heritage.

Recinte Modernista Sant Pau

• Cost: €17 regular ticket, special prices, free access every first Sunday of the month
• District: Horta-Guinardó

Visiting a hospital might not be on your vacation to-do list. But don’t worry, this one isn’t in operation anymore.

Recinte Modernista Sant Pau is an art-nouveau gem by Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. It housed the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau from 1916 to 2009 and earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1997.

By the late 19th century, the old Hospital de la Santa Creu in the Raval neighborhood was outdated and lacking in space. This prompted an ambitious project driven by the latest advancements in health and hygiene.

Unlike many other attractions, it’s a lot less crowded. Here you can peacefully marvel at beautiful architectural details, intricate mosaics, and tranquil gardens.

Casa Vicens

• Cost: €18 regular ticket, special prices
• District: Gràcia

Casa Vicens, Gaudí’s first major project, stands out with its unique Mudéjar style, blending Spanish and Arabic influences. Built between 1883 and 1885, this luxurious summer house was commissioned by the wealthy trader Manuel Vicens i Montaner. Back then, Gràcia was a lush, sparsely populated area.

Despite its UNESCO World Heritage status since 2005, you won’t find long queues here. It’s a great way to explore Gaudí’s early design principles and an intriguing, lesser-known landmark for visitors. But heads up: it’s €4 more expensive if you buy your ticket upon arrival.

After exploring Casa Vicens, take a stroll through the Gràcia neighborhood. You’ll find charming plazas, lively vermouth bars, independent boutiques, specialty coffee joints, and the Mercat de la Llibertat.

Jardí Botànic de Barcelona

• Cost: €3.50 regular ticket, special prices
• District: Sants-Montjuïc

For a peaceful afternoon, head to the Botanical Garden of Barcelona on Montjuïc. This green haven offers plenty of pathways to get lost in while learning about diverse flora.

Just be sure to set aside enough time to explore all 14 hectares of space. It’s one of the city’s largest parks. Established in 1999, the garden is home to hundreds of plant species from regions like Southern Australia, the coast of Chile, California, South Africa, and the Mediterranean. In essence, environments that all share a climate similar to Barcelona’s.

More than beautiful flowers, the garden plays a crucial role in conservation and research. As you wander through, you’ll appreciate the efforts to protect endangered species and promote sustainability. And as the seasons change, you’ll get a different experience each time.

Montjuïc

Sure, we’ve highlighted some specific sights, but let’s talk about Montjuïc as a whole, because you can spend a whole day here.

Located in southwest Barcelona, the hill has stunning views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea, along with various attractions and parks worth visiting.

It’s an ideal spot to escape the hustle and bustle. While the castle, fountains, and cable cars are its more popular highlights, the cemetery in particular is a hidden gem. It serves as the resting place for many victims of Franco’s regime, but with scenic views across the port. If anything, it almost resembles a beautiful park with numerous sculptures and angels.

In the summer, the castle becomes a large outdoor concert venue and cinema on some evenings. Featuring a mix of classics and new movies shown in their original language, there’s something for every cinephile.

Old Town Sarrià

​​For a taste of local life, head to Old Town Sarrià. This pedestrian friendly ‘hood offers plenty of interesting shops and cafés, along with some minor sites of interest. As an upper-middle-class area, it’s also very safe.

The old part of the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district, with its charming squares and main street, Carrer Major, reflects its history. Nearly every building hints at its origins as one of the most prosperous village on the Barcelona plain. Once independent, it was annexed by Barcelona in 1921. You can still find some of the oldest structures, such as the former town hall in Plaça del Consell de la Vila.

Tibidabo

Yes, another hill has made it to our list of least touristy places to see.

It’s where you go if you want to get away from the hordes of people and constant noise. Plus, it’s great for nature lovers. Stroll along the panoramic Carretera de les Aigües, a path that’s mostly flat with breathtaking views. Or, venture further up the mountain for a hike.

But if you’re really looking for some alone time, steer clear of the amusement park, which is also situated there. You’ll easily recognize it by the iconic, rainbow-colored ferris wheel perched at the top.

Even in a tourism tornado like Barcelona, new sites will always await. Ones where you won’t lose your mind waiting in line or feel like you’re in a concert being shoved against other bodies.

Barcelona is one of Europe’s top hot spots. Last year alone, the city saw over 12 million tourist arrivals.

If you’re planning a visit, whether it’s your first or not, might we suggest aiming for the quieter months? Skip the hustle and bustle from May to August and opt for fall, early spring, or even winter.

As summers get hotter thanks to extreme climate change, avoiding the peak season can be a very smart move. September offers a noticeably more relaxed vibe, with temperatures still pleasant enough to enjoy the beach and the outdoors. You might even catch a festival, but read up on those over here. And if you didn’t know, November to April is calçot season! So for anyone who’s a serious foodie, this typical Catalan dish is a must-try.

Experiencing the city when it’s not overflowing with folk can be a game-changer. Whether you stroll the streets in December or March, you’ll notice the contrast: lighter crowds, better hotel deals, and probably happier locals. It’s a win-win.

2. Discover options for sustainable accommodation

You can interpret sustainable accommodation in one of two ways. First, eco or green hotels (certified, if possible). Second, those that are ideally locally-owned or independent.

With millions flocking to Barcelona each year, finding a good place to stay is becoming a real challenge. Add to that the fact that many are taking advantage of sites like Airbnb to rent out extra rooms or spare apartments. In 2017, it was reported that as many as 50,000 beds were being rented illegally. With stricter laws coming in, the situation is supposed to get better, but it’s had a pretty negative impact on residents. Just google “Barcelona housing crisis”.

3. Shop from Catalan brands, artisans, and specialty stores

On to the more exciting stuff!

Although not a fashion capital like Paris or Milan, Barcelona has a wide range of homegrown labels for you to choose from. Sure, you’ve got internationally-known Spanish brands like ZARA and MANGO. Those lower prices might be tempting, but that’s just fast fashion targeted to the masses. Hardly sustainable in any way.

For stylish women’s clothing, Lola Casademunt. For everyday basics, SHON MOTT. For sneakers and other footwear, Munich. Honestly, the list is longer than you’d think. If you have the chance to befriend a local, ask where they like to source their closet picks!

Then there are the more traditional artisans and workshops mostly located in the central, older neighborhoods. La Manual Alpargetara has been handmaking espadrilles since the 1940s. If you’re not interested in adding to your wardrobe, Cerería Subirà has been handcrafting wax candles since 1741. Herboristeria del Rei is Barcelona’s first herbal shop, which opened its original store in 1818.

4. Dine at local establishments

While you’ll spot the usual fast food suspects, give them a pass. You’re in a country that’s rich in traditional cuisine as well as modern gastronomy. So expose yourself to native flavors. That way, every euro you spend will also go back to the local economy.

The culinary scene in Barcelona is a real treat, and it doesn’t have to break the bank if you steer clear of tourist traps. Catalan restaurants – and Mediterranean dining, in general – are big on seasonal menus, serving up fresh, locally-sourced dishes that also lighten your carbon footprint. And of course, don’t forget the markets! La Boqueria is iconic, but there are also neighborhood markets like Santa Caterina or Sant Antoni. You’ll find a tasty mix of fruits, cheese, jamón and other cold-cut meats to munch on.

5. Take public transport

This one’s pretty straightforward. Reduce your carbon footprint by taking public transport whenever you can, including to and from the airport – or any main hub! Barcelona is one of the most well-connected cities in the world, internally and externally. Some of its main features include 8 metro lines, over 100 bus lines (not even counting the night ones), and two tram networks.

Road congestion is bad enough, so do your part as a short-term guest and reduce your emissions contribution while you’re there.

6. Sit back and relax in a park

Parks and green spaces are crucial for urban environments. They’re a setting for both physical activity and a mental pause.

In a bustling metropolis like Barcelona, they provide a moment of tranquility amid the hustle. Take a stroll or jog through any of the city’s green havens to connect with nature, recharge your batteries from all the sightseeing, or simply enjoy the therapeutic benefits of being outdoors.

The Parc del Laberint d’Horta, the oldest in Barcelona, has a great maze for you to lose yourself in. The vast Parc de Cervantes is famed for its abundant roses, which bloom in late spring and summer. And the Jardins de la Tamarita, just by the foot of Avinguda Tibidabo, are a beautiful showcase of how a once-private garden has transformed into a cherished public space for all to enjoy.

• Recycle your trash: the city has a robust waste management system. You’ll undoubtedly walk past their massive recycling bins every few blocks or so. Plus, a bounty of your regular ol’ garbage cans. There’s really no excuse to litter.
• Be mindful of those living in Barcelona: as welcome as tourists are, imagine having thousands of foreigners passing by the front of your home every day. It’s got to be a bit overwhelming. Be mindful of residents and fellow travelers as you go around. If you’re taking a photo outside, try not to block the sidewalk. If you’ve decided to enjoy a fun night out, avoid getting too noisy or rowdy as you return to the hotel. And please, for everyone’s sake, remember that the street is not a toilet. No exceptions.

These are only a few of Catalunya’s top surfing locations; there are several more, a little further afield, that provide surfers with amazing waves and a distinctive experience – the Ebro Delta for example. It is crucial to remember that surfing can occasionally be risky, thus it is always advised to proceed with caution and respect for the sea conditions.

La Barceloneta

A very well-liked spot for surfing in Barcelona is the Barceloneta beach. It is undoubtedly the birthplace of surfing in Catalunya. It provides a good number of high-quality left and right peaks. On the sandy bottom, its waves shatter. It requires steady seas.

Particularly in the summer, it’s usually flat. It is relatively protected from north-easterly winds and performs best in north-westerly or westerly breezes. The east-southeast direction of the wave is optimal. The tide has little effect on the swell’s quality.

Caleta de Montgat

Montgat is an exposed beach break with reliable waves. One of the Maresme coast’s most well-liked wave destinations. It provides good waves and functions well in calmer conditions. You can locate tubes even on good days. In close proximity to Barcelona, there are strong, swift waves for surfing.

There is limited protection from crosswinds and the northwest has the best wind direction. The most frequent wave types are wind and short-period swells, with southeasterly winds making for the best wave direction. There are rights and lefts in the beach break able to be surfed at any tides.

Masnou

It is an urban beach of 1 km in length. It is located right next to the breakwater of the marina of Masnou, in the Maresme of Barcelona. It works well in the autumn and winter months. It is a fairly crowded wave, largely because it is located very close to the urban area of Barcelona.

El Masnou is a fairly exposed sandbar. The summer tends to have flat conditions, as in most of the Mediterranean Sea. The best wind direction is from the northwest. The ideal wave direction is from the east southeast. Waves are mostly left-handed and there are good waves at all stages of the tide.

Castelldefels

In the tourist town of Castelldefels, about half an hour from Barcelona, there is a magnificent beach for kiting. Here there is a special kite area where you can kite without getting fined or without ending up crashing your kite into a swimmer. In general, Castelldefels beach is a very suitable kitesurfing spot for those who are just starting out in the sport, although when the wind blows from the east or west, the waves grow and the wind is stronger. As such, you will need to have more skills when handling the kite

The best time for kiting in Castelldefels is the months of April to July. According to the regulations, kitesurfing is prohibited throughout Catalunya from June 1 to September 30 due to the number of bathers. The only exceptions are the special kitesurf spots, which are only three, Castelldefels being the only one in the province of Barcelona. The other 2 places where kitesurfing is allowed are Sant Pere Pescador and Trabucador beach in Sant Carles de la Rapita.

Bogatell Beach

Bogatell beach is probably one of the better beaches in Barcelona for kitesurfing. When the Levante wind blows, kitesurfers congregate at this primary kitesurfing location. What draws a lot of kiters to Boagetell is that the beach is easily reached by car and public transportation. Furthermore, the beach’s northern breakwater creates a few meters of reasonably good freestyle water plate.

Fall and winter are the ideal seasons to go kitesurfing at Playa del Bogatell. But beginners are not advised to use Bogatell beach for kiteboarding. There are breakwaters on every beach in Barcelona, so you have to be skilled at kiteboarding to avoid getting blown into the cement blocks. Moreover, large swells are typically brought on by westerly winds.

Vilassar de Mar / Cabrera de Mar

Located between Mataró and Vilassar de Mar, the Cabrera kitesurf area is only 30 minutes by public transportation and 35 minutes by car from Barcelona. The distance between Cabrera de Mar and Vilassar de Mar beaches is roughly 1000 meters. Sadly, kiteboarding throughout the summer in June to September is restricted at the site.

Its proximity to Barcelona and lack of crowds compared to Castelldefels are further advantages. In Vilassar, there can be up to 50 kites visible on a day with strong winds. Both beaches’ circumstances permit the practice of various styles, including strapless, hydrofoil, freestyle, and freeride. Rainy days may prevent car entry; however, you can park close by and enter on foot.

Where is the Chinatown in Barcelona?

First things first, where is Barcelona’s Chinatown? It’s a good question and you’ll often get a lot of different answers. Yet, within Barcelona there’s only one real Chinatown that resembles those that you’d find in London, San Francisco, etc. And that’s the one that’s tucked behind the Passeig de Sant Joan.

There’s no archway – although admittedly that would be quite a cool addition to the area – but you’ll know you’ve arrived because most of the shops in the area carry colorful symbols and signs that are from China and other asian nations.

Specifically, we’re looking at the those streets beyond the main Passeig. Focused on Napols, Roger de Flor, Sicilia and Sardenya – as well as the intersecting streets between those – and leading right up to the Diagonal Avenue. The nearest metros are Arc de Triomf and Tetuan.

Once there, you’ll be surprised at how much like a big-city Chinatown this is becoming. It’s a fascinating break from the rest of the city.

What to find in Barcelona’s Chinatown?

Asian Supermarkets
