What to take to Barcelona: a Packing List for Barcelona in Summer

Although it seems logical, before visiting Barcelona you must take under consideration the weather during your trip. After all, you need to be ready and bring everything you might need to enjoy your trip to the fullest.

Barcelona has more than 3,000 hours of sun per year and temperatures and humidity are usually high during the day and also during the night. The terraces, parks, and beaches are always a nice place to have a break during your Summer trip.

What to Pack on a Trip to Barcelona in Summer

If you want to know how to make the ideal suitcase for your holidays in Barcelona, do not miss the following list:

Sun Lotion

In the middle of the Summer (July and August) Barcelona gets very hot. Day and night, the city has high and intense temperatures. Sunscreen is an essential element of your suitcase. You don’t want to end up with a major sunstroke, do you? UV rays are dangerous, not only in Summer but during the whole year. They can cause sunburns and skin damage among other injuries, so you need to be aware of being protected all the time. We recommend you using sunscreen regardless of whether it’s Summer or winter. Even when the day is cloudy, use the sun lotion. Your skin will be thankful.

Sunglasses

We have already talked about how much the sun can hurt. But, since most of the people seem to not have enough respect for the sun, here is another great hazard: the damage in your eyes. UV rays can affect your corneas, affecting your sight, especially if you look at the sun directly. That’s why good sunglasses are so important. The hottest hours of the day are between 12 PM and 6 PM, so make sure you have them on your backpack before setting foot on the streets. Remember: to visit Barcelona and enjoy its monuments you will need a healthy couple of eyes.

Summer Clothes

Barcelona has great weather even when it’s not Summer. That’s why you should be prepared when coming to Barcelona in Summer, especially about your clothes. We are not just talking about shorts, sandals or flip-flops. It’s important for you to pack the appropriate clothing for the season: bikini or swimsuit for the beach or pool, a hat to protect yourself from the sun during your tours or at the beach, and light clothes made with natural fibers, if possible, like shirts or dresses. Barcelona is a city with high humidity, with which the heat intensifies, but there are also some nights during the Summer when the temperature drops a little and the sea breeze can make you feel chilly. So make sure to bring a light sweater for these nights if you do not want to catch a Summer cold. And last but not least, a towel for the beach! Hotels in Barcelona provide you with towels, but normally these are for the room and also for the pool. So you may need one at least for the beach. You can check it with your hotel before coming.

Comfortable Shoes

Remember Nancy Sinatra´s song “These boots are made for walking”? Well, that’s exactly what you need to bring to Barcelona. Visiting a city means walking a lot, so remember to wear your most comfortable shoes. If you buy shoes in Barcelona and you want to wear them during your visit, buy some bandages in case you are going to walk a lot with them. New shoes need a little time to adjust to your feet. Sneakers or soft shoes will do the trick.

A Good City Guide of Barcelona

Getting lost in Barcelona is very easy because, despite its excellent distribution, it can give you the feeling that all buildings are the same, especially if it is the first time you visit it. To avoid this, make sure you bring a good guide. There are especial guides that have not only the location of the monuments and the distribution of the streets but a lot of additional touristic information. A tip: use the mountain and the sea location for orientation. They are always up and down the city!

A Plug Adapter

This is something that people never consider when they come to Barcelona. In Spain (and the rest of Europe, except for the United Kingdom) the plugs are of the F type (two parallel holes). Your hotel might have a spare one for you to borrow, but since most of the tourist forget too, they probably won’t have any. In airports, they sell very cheap adapters of different types. And also there are some stores in Barcelona where you can buy a plug adapter. Anyway, it would be better if you bring one from home. Otherwise, forget about charging your phone, laptop or electric toothbrush. The horror!

Camera to Take Pictures

We can’t trust our memory, that’s why they invented pictures and cameras. Barcelona is one of the most photographed cities in the world because of its beauty. You will need a good camera to immortalize all those monuments and happy memories with your travel partners. Keep it always at your site during the visit, so you can capture all the beautiful Barcelona views without having to worry about losing it.

Selfie Stick

Sometimes it’s difficult to take pictures of yourself with the whole background, especially when it’s a group photo. That’s why our recommendation is to use a flexible tripod with remote control or a selfie stick. They sell them in almost every Barcelona souvenir store, but it be will cheaper if you bring it from home. The other choice is bothering people asking them to take a picture of you. You can do that, but the selfie stick will allow you to spend more time and work on the perfect snap.

Money in cash

Nowadays you can travel with just credit or debit cards. In Barcelona, it is common for people to pay with a card and most establishments have data phones, although sometimes with a minimum purchase amount. Ask before in the markets. There are lots of stores and restaurants in markets that only accept money in cash. However, it never hurts to carry cash (in this case it would be euros, Europe official currency), at least to buy simple things such as bottles of water, snacks or souvenirs. It will be so much easier.

Conversation guide in Spanish and/or Catalan

In Barcelona, there are two official languages, Castilian (also known as Spanish), the official language in most of the country, and Catalan, the language of Catalonia. Having a guide with basic phrases in both idioms will come in handy. In addition, Catalans feel very proud of their language and talking a little bit it’s a good way to meet local people. Having an internet connection in your smartphone that would allow you to connect with google translator at any time would also be a great idea. Just in case.

Enjoy your Summer Trip!

Why you should visit Barcelona: 12 compelling reasons

We love Barcelona, that’s for sure. It’s a feeling that can’t be explained; we could give you reasons, even from the top of our heads to come visit Barcelona (we’re about to do it, actually) but they are cold facts. To fall in love with Barcelona you need to come and feel it, meet its people, live its streets and get the local vibe. To live like a Barcelonese, you only need to relax and enjoy little things, from trendy exhibitions, cold beers and folkloric festivals.

Here is a list of 12 reasons why you should choose Barcelona as your next holiday destination.

12 compelling reasons to visit Barcelona

1. Because Barcelona is different

One of the best things about Spain is that it has a very rich and diverse culture. Each region has their own traditions which make them unique in the country and in the world. Catalan habits are very rooted, and locals feel very proud about them. Catalans have their own language, the Catalan idiom, which has led to the development of a literature, art and traditions, movies, theatre plays, music bands, clowns, poetry slams and so many more. The best way to know and feel them all is coming to Barcelona.

2. Because of the colorful Ramblas

Vibrant and full of life, Las Ramblas is one of the longest and most famous main streets in Europe. This boulevard is bordered by trees, shops and cool coffee-shops. Among the restaurants there are flower stalls, kiosks with souvenirs and ice cream. Also, in the Ramblas we find La Boquería, the most famous traditional market in the city, where you can taste 100% authentic local food. Don’t miss it when you visit Barcelona!

3. Because you can find tapas everywhere

The Mediterranean Diet is the Spanish most beloved and healthy cultural heritage, and most doctors will tell you that it is one of the most nutritious, rich and healthy diets in the world. Within the Mediterranean diet, we find products, fruits, vegetables or ways to cook the meal. One of the most famous is the tapa, the idea of serving food in small portions, so a meal can be composed by several types of food, a festival for you taste buds.

4. Because of The Castellers

According to the UNESCO, the Castellers are part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Why? Because it’s typical, ancient and a real triumph of the will. This activity consists is making impressive human towers, where each person climbs on the back of another and so on, forming human towers of up to 10 floors. The goal is winning the competition by making the highest tower – another big reason to see them live while visiting Barcelona.

5. Because Barcelona is beach and mountain at the same time!

There are few destinations in the world that combine beach and mountains in such a harmonious way. In Barcelona you do not have to give up any of the two: you could do a mountain hiking route that could end up in the sea (or vice versa). When a person thinks of holidays, they must choose between beach or mountain. Yet, in Barcelona, when choosing a fun day on the outdoors you can pick your bikini and go to the beach or wear your hiking boots and go to the mountains. The person who said you can’t have your cake and eat it too has never been to Barcelona!

6. Because of Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch

If you visit Barcelona you realize that this incredible city is the cradle of the Catalan modernist movement, which is palpable in almost every corner. Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner, Puig i Cadafalch and Jujol are some of the artists that left their print in the streets of the Catalonian capital. Palau de la Música, Hospital de Sant Pau or the Palau de Les Punxes are some of the Barcelona benchmarks that carry the Catalan modernism quality label. Plus, don’t forget the Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló or La Pedrera, another architecture pieces that you cannot miss when you come to the city.

7. Because of the sports

In Barcelona we love sports. The are many professional sport schools where children combine sports and education, and as a tourist, you have the opportunity to enjoy many sports competitions live: handball, hockey, basketball, golf, tennis, gymnastics, …
Football is one of the most important ones. After all, according to the FIFA, two of the 5 best teams of all time are from Spain: Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. If you come to Barcelona, you should go watch a live match, and discover the local feeling towards our football teams. You will feel the adrenaline with the goal scoring and you will shout with the rest of the fans the FC Barcelona anthem. Let us assure you that you won’t forget it.

8. Because you find free Wi-Fi everywhere

Yes, you’ve heard us: free WIFI. And we are not talking about free Wi-Fi in a determined area of the city. We are talking about free internet in the WHOLE city. Yes, Barcelona City Council offers a totally free Wi-Fi network that allows you to connect to the Internet through WiFi access points located in various municipal facilities. Candy crush all over!!

9. Because of th Barcelona’s Olympic Port

This neighborhood was built to hosts all the athletes that were going to participate in the 1992 Olympic Games. The buildings of this district are big, sun-oriented and with big gardens. There are several shopping malls around the district and it’s very close to the sea. The Olympic Port it’s a nice visit, especially for all the Olympic games fans who want to see the area that, for a brief period, was the epicenter of the world of sports.

10. Because of its beautiful sunsets

Barcelona has a very distinguishable skyline, formed by emblematic buildings such as la Pedrera, la Sagrada Familia or de Agbar tower. Enjoying them from a high spot is one of the best activities you can do when visiting the city. Going to the top of the Montjuic mountain, the Carmel bunkers or the top of the MNAC museum will give you an incredible view of the whole city. Do it at the beginning or the end of the day, and you will fall in love with Barcelona and its astonishing sunsets.

11. Because of traditional dancing: Sardanas

The Sardana is the traditional dancing of the region. It is danced collectively by holding hands and forming a circle, while dancing with the shoes to the rhythm of the traditional Catalonian flute. Every Sunday at 1 PM there are Sardana dancing contests, so if you want to learn how to dance it, don’t miss it.

12. Because of El Raval

El Raval is a centric and diverse Barcelona neighborhood where more than 20 languages are spoken. It’s an area that combines the exoticism of the different cultures that live in the neighborhood, plus the young trendy vibe of the artists. The best areas to go out are on Joaquin Costa Street and Rambla del Raval.

If you ask someone, whether local or a tourist, what is the name of the most famous street in Barcelona, the answer will be the same – Las Ramblas. A little bit loud, bright, tempting, adventurous, this street has many stories behind her back. Moreover, we want to reveal some secrets of Las Ramblas and 10 places you should visit here.

About 60 years ago, in 1954 at the Villa de Madrid square what lies near Las Ramblas took place some reparation works after the Civil War. Once the noisy sound stopped for a while, the workers found no more no less the necropolis dated I-II s. AD. Is the known fact that the Romans, who were living in the present Tarragona, chose “Barcino” for the new strategic sea gate. For their new colony they chose the territory between two rivers, one was running by the present Via Laietana street, another one –by the street that later will be known as Rambla. After some researches, the scientists find out the etymology of this word. Originally, the flush of water that was running down from the Collserola, the locals called it “Arenales” what means “sandy”. When the Arabs called them “Rambla”, what has converted at the Las Ramblas we all know and beloved.

Las Ramblas, almost every piece of land or stone hide a story. For example La Boquería market was built were long ago before it was a monastery San Jose, and at the place where during the years was staying the convent of Trinitarians we can contemplate the famous theatre “Liceu”. Walking down Las Ramblas don’t pass by the façade of the Poliorama theatre, people say the watch shows the official time in Barcelona. Try something sweet or the best croissant in the city at the old confectioners shop “Escribà”. Look into the Virreina palace that houses very interesting photo-exhibitions. Finally, visit “Boadas cocktails” the first bar in the city, founded in 1933 where for the first time the locals, who used to drink cava and wine, tried cocktails.
