5 Outdoor Activities to Enjoy During Christmas in Barcelona

When the average person thinks of Barcelona, they’ll probably conjure up images of beaches, sangria, tapas and sunshine.

But Barcelona in the winter is by no means boring – there’s still a huge amount to do and see! If you’re looking for some outdoor activities to enjoy during Christmas in Barcelona, here is some inspiration.

Outdoors activities for Christmas in Barcelona

1. Visit Christmas Markets

Barcelona has a unique holiday season. Some people mainly celebrate the 25th December, while others celebrate The Three Kings which sees Melchor, Gaspar and Balthasar arrive in Barcelona by boat on the evening of January 5.

Some lucky kids even celebrate both!

There are a range of traditional markets in Barcelona, as well as a huge procession on January 5. There’s a lot to see and do, so you’ll be sure to get slip into the festive spirit in no time. The weather can become pretty chilly too, so it’s a great idea to wrap up warm and enjoy a hot drink!

Here are some of the key Christmas markets in Barcelona.

Fira de Nadal a la Sagrada Familia

Looking to enjoy a Christmas market while presided over by the city’s most iconic piece of architecture? This lovely market surrounds the Sagrada Familia and has over 120 stalls. This is a great way to combine sightseeing with shopping and this market runs from the end of November to December 23.

Gran Via – Three Kings Fair

This huge market has over 300 stalls packed with Christmas goodies and fun toys. Themed mostly around the Three Kinds, you’ll find a wide range of traditional toys here which make this the perfect place to pick up a typical Spanish gift. This particular market is lovely to walk through, given that it’s a straight line and it’s easy to see a lot of the stuff that’s on offer. Enjoying some warm churros while shopping is lovely, and you can do that here from the 20 December to the 6 January.

Plaça de Catalunya Christmas Fair

This is one of the largest Christmas markets in Barcelona and as such, it has a huge range of activities and fun moments. The theme is based around dreams, and you’ll find that there’s a theater, bookshop, sports shop, and an awesome toyshop. If you’re looking to do some shopping while feeling the Christmas spirit, this is a great option. It’s also a fantastic place to pick up a nice memento for your trip!

This market begins on the 21 December and runs until 4 January – meaning that it spans both of the holiday celebrations here in Barcelona.

Fira de Nadal de Sants

This Christmas market takes place at the Plaça de Sants, making it easy to get to. It also runs from the end of November until just before Christmas, so it’s a great option. You’ll find roasted chestnuts and all other sorts of goodies here. Sants is just a little bit outside the city center too, so it’s a great way to see some alternative neighborhoods that Barcelona has on offer.

Sant Cugat Christmas Market

While this isn’t technically in the city, it’s just a short train ride away and a fantastic option if you’re looking for German-style markets that come complete with wooden huts, mulled wine and other Christmas market staples. You can catch the train from a number of stations and it’s a great day trip just slightly outside the city.

2. Enjoy an E-Bike Tour

Electronic bikes have exploded in popularity in recent years. It’s little wonder why – they offer a safe and speedy way to get around the city and see all of the best sights. You’ll learn about Gaudi’s architecture and Picasso’s favorite bars while stopping for delicious local snacks.

Barcelona is particularly suited to this type of tour, given that it has wide streets and the necessary infrastructure to help you safely and quickly get around town. You’ll be sure to enjoy zipping around on these bikes during your tour!

It’s possible to fully enjoy e-bike tours in Barcelona even in the winter months, given that the temperature is pretty mild. You’ll probably want to wrap up a little bit though!

3. Take a Segway Tour

Segway tours in Barcelona are another popular outdoor activity to enjoy during Christmas, offering what some might consider a more relaxed alternative to e-bike tours.

Segways are awesome machines. They are a great way to traverse Barcelona’s terrain in style and to get a comfortable view of all the key sights. They are easy to maneuver and operate, and tour guides are great at sharing instructions and information about Barcelona.

The tours pass by the key spots in Barcelona and allow people to stop off for delicious food and snacks along the way… What isn’t to love?

4. Visit Barcelona’s Parks

A truly Mediterranean city Barcelona has mild winters, and this means that you can still enjoy the city’s many beautiful parks in the winter. If you’re at a loose end and looking for things to do in Barcelona, a visit to the park is always a great option.

The city can sometimes get a little hectic so taking some time to relax in a calm, green park is a great way to regroup. Wherever you happen to be staying in the city you won’t be far from a beautiful park. In terms of the ones that are highly recommended, people often mention:

Park Güell

Parc de la Ciutadella

Montjuic Hill

Parc del Laberint

A quick search on Google Maps will help you to find a park near you. A crisp stroll is a great way to spend a few pleasant hours.

5. Explore Barcelona on Foot

Barcelona is a very popular destination for tourists, receiving an incredible 32 million tourists in 2017. It’s wonderful that so many people get to explore the city and its wonders, but it can get a little crowded in the summer months!

The cooler months in Barcelona offer you an opportunity to enjoy the city at a slower pace and get up close and personal with the city. You can wander the streets comfortably and find new places while enjoying easier access to a range of attractions and buildings.

If you love Barcelona and want to get a real feel for the city, exploring on foot can be very relaxing. You could grab a coffee, wrap up and explore the beautiful city. You could even incorporate one of the Christmas markets into the walk!

We hope that these tips have shown just how much variety is on offer in terms of outdoors activities in Barcelona. We wish you a very happy holiday season and hope you enjoy your trip!

Barcelona’s best viewpoints for amazing Instagram shots

At the end of 2017, Instagram, the most notorious photography-based social network, announced that it had already exceeded 800 million active users per month and 500 million users per day, confirming it as one of the most visited platforms in the world and the fastest growing social network in recent years.

Their biggest contribution was focusing in something that was already part of most people’s lives: the photography. Besides, the use of hashtags is also one of their main strengths. Thanks to these, people can post anything at any time and become popular without the need of having a big audience like in other social networks, without much effort.

The latest study by IAB Spain reveals that the hashtag #Barcelona is the most used by users of this social network with more than 31 million shared photos. And it’s one of the 5 most shared destinations in the world! If you want to have a boost on your Instagram account, check this selection with Barcelona’s best viewpoints for spectacular Instagram shots. You will get surprised of how many likes you get!

Top places in Barcelona with panoramic views to take a photo

Carmel Bunkers

Located in the Horta neighborhood, this viewpoint is famous for being one of the few where you can see a panoramic view of the entire city. In addition, it is a place surrounded by some of the most tragic, yet interesting, history of the city. In the spot, we find the remains of anti-aerial bunkers that were built in 1937 to protect civilians from bombs during the Spanish Civil War. These bunkers were also known as the anti-aircraft guns of Carmel, and they stayed in the same spot until the fifties, when they were removed. The visit is free and has no schedule, so you can visit them whenever you want. Grasp the opportunity and take a gorgeous photo for your Instagram of the Barcelona magnificent skyline.

Castell de Montjuic

Located a few minutes away from Plaza España, the Castle of Montjuic is one of the most popular places in the city for its beauty and the panoramic views of Barcelona. Its privileged location is the result of military planning since it used to be a fortress from where they were able to control the city, the port and every sea access. The top of the castle allows the visitor to enjoy unbeatable views of the city and its surroundings. The courtyard terrace of the Castle is the best possible viewpoint of Barcelona from where you can see the port, the Mediterranean Sea, the Barcelona beaches and coast, and the Baix Llobregat.

Mossèn Costa i Llobera Gardens

If you don’t want to go up to the castle, you can also enjoy a views from the Mossèn Costa i Llobera Gardens. These gardens are well known for the variety of cactus and plants, which make up a unique biosphere reserve in Europe. Located in the Montjuic mountain and facing the Mediterranean Sea, the gardens are a great landscaping work of art, perfect for visiting on a sunny day. In addition, the rehabilitation that has been done recently has greatly improved access for visitors. Inspiring and bucolic, the gardens have a unique viewpoint from where you can take incredible pictures of the Barcelona skyline that won’t be unnoticed on your Instagram follower’s timeline.

Tibidabo

The Tibidabo is – with 512 meters above sea level – the highest peak of the Collserola mountain, in Barcelona. From this spot you can enjoy beautiful views and a great landscape to add to your Instagram pics. In addition, you can visit the Tibidabo Amusement Park, a centennial park that combines great new rides like Dididado or the Roller Coaster with the most emblematic, such as the Plane or the Atalaia. And do not forget to take a photo in El Camí del Cel, the promenade with some of the best views of the city, where you will find historical attractions such as the Automaton Museum and others that the whole family would enjoy during your tour in Barcelona.

La Sagrada Familia

The Expiatory Temple of La Sagrada Familia, also known simply as Sagrada Familia, is a Catholic church in Barcelona, designed by the modernist architect Antoni Gaudí. The construction works started in 1882, and even today it’s still a work in progress. It is an impressive work of architecture and one of the most notorious monuments in the Catalan capital, to the point of being the most tagged Instagram monument in Spain. There are amazing viewpoints in the towers of the church, from where you can take awesome pictures of the city to impress your Instagram friends.

Columbus Monument Viewpoint

The monument of Christopher Columbus, located at the end of La Rambla, that has become one of the symbols of the city is as involved in mystery as the explorer itself. Is also one of the most photographed places in the city, but is there a viewpoint on the top of the statue? Yes! There’s not so much space, but the views are awesome, especially on sunny days. Opened every day from 8.30 AM to 8.30 PM, the Columbus statue is a great, relatively-unknown viewpoint of the city. We would recommend you not only take pictures from the top of the statue, but also the escalator ride too. The price is 6€ per adult, 4€ for children with ages between 4 and 12 and free for kids under 4 years old. It is worth it!

Arenas

The Las Arenas Shopping Mall is one of the unique shopping malls you will ever visit in Spain and probably in the world. Why? Well, it is built on an old bullfighting arena. And, if that’s not enough, it has a great viewpoint on its rooftop, from where you can have a great view for taking a cool picture of Barcelona or a fun Instagram story. It has 360 degrees open space, so from this great viewpoint you can see Plaza España, the MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya), the Joan Miró Parks with its famous statues and the Puig and Cadafalch four columns, representing the Catalan flag.

Gracia Neighborhood in Barcelona: what to do and what to visit

The neighborhoods of Barcelona treasure a lot of streets, squares and buildings that you can not miss when you come to visit the Catalan capital. Today we are going to spend a day in the Gracia neighborhood in Barcelona, an area with bohemian imprint and artistic and multicultural character.

We’ll go through the main points of interest so that you immerse yourself fully in this neighborhood’s life, a place that once was an independent municipality until the end of the 19th century. The Gracia neighborhood became part of the urban nucleus of Barcelona in 1897, but this place still preserves the magic of the city that one day was, so you will find many cool things to see and do.

Discover the Gracia neighborhood in Barcelona

The squares in the Gracia neighborhood

There are several squares you can find in the neighborhood of Gracia. The most popular is the Plaça de Sol, with terraces and cafes and with a lot of atmosphere during the day and, especially, at night.
Another square, one of the most beautiful, and in which you will also find many people is the Plaça de la Virreina. There you’ll see the parish church of Sant Joan, and even you can dance some swing on Sundays.

An obligatory visit when you are in Gracia neighborhood is the Plaça del Diamant, which conserves an anti-aircraft shelter from the Civil War, the Plaça del Nord or the Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia. Plaça de la Sedeta is currently an active civic center in the neighborhood and a symbol of struggle and neighborhood work since it is located in the old Pujol i Casacuberta factory, known by the name of this square.

The Park Güell

We now move to one of the most emblematic and visited places in Gracia: the Park Güell. This jewel is a work of Antonio Gaudí, and we invite you to walk through each of its corners. Its square is a viewpoint where you can enjoy the spectacular views towards Barcelona and, in the park, you will find nature, art and history.

The construction of the Park Güell began in 1900 and some of its essential spaces are the Escalinata del Dragón (the Stairway of the Dragon), the Sala Hipóstila (the Hypostyle Hall), the Teatro Griego (the Greek Theatre) or the Plaza de la Naturaleza (Nature Square) that is currently under construction, el Pórtico de la Lavandera (the Porch of the Washerwoman) or the Jardines de Austria (Austrian Gardens). You can also enjoy incredible walks along its roads, streets and viaducts.

The Modernist architecture of Gracia

Squares, parks and, also, buildings with history. The Gracia neighborhood is the cradle of some of the most representative modernist buildings of modernist architecture in Barcelona. One of them is the Casa Vicens, the first work of Gaudí and former bourgeois residence. It is located on Carolines Street.

Another beautiful building that you will find on your walk through the neighborhood of Gracia is the Casa Rubinat, of modernist architecture, built by Francesc Berenguer Mestres, the right hand of Gaudí, in 1909. As a curiosity, the project is signed by Joan Rubió i Bellver, since Berenguer was not titled.

The Mercat de la Llibertat (the Freedom Market)

Another modernist building you will have the opportunity to visit in the Gracia neighborhood in Barcelona is the Mercat de la Llibertat (the Freedom Market), located in the homonymous square. The space it occupied since 1888, formerly known as Plaza de la Constitución, was the place where farmers sold their vegetables, vegetables and other products.

Now, you can focus on a whole feast of sounds, smells and colors within a building with iron and work structure, decorated with pieces of wrought iron, which was designed to protect the food and all things that were inside. And if there are not many people or you have time, you can taste some of the foods or dishes that are served in one of the stalls directly in the same market.

The viaduct of Vallcarca

Located in the upper part of Gracia, between the Coll and the Putxet hills, this viaduct is a civil engineering work that was built by architect Miquel Pasqual Tintorer. It was the first time that iron was used with reinforced concrete to cover with cement a construction at the bank of a stream.

With this viaduct the cars and people could move from one side to the other and, in the same way, the neighborhood was opened to the rest of the city, favoring the connections. If you want to enjoy unbeatable views, we invite you to come to visit this point, one of the highest in Barcelona.

The Teatre Més Petit del Món (the Smallest Theatre in the World)

The Gracia neighborhood of Barcelona has the honor to host the smallest theater in the world. It is located on Encarnación Street, number 25, and is located on the ground floor of an old farmhouse from 1890. It was opened to the public in 1999 and, in this place, there are concerts, shows and events, all on a magic stage and in a familiar and cozy environment.

The streets with charm

If you want to walk, Gracia is a beautiful place to do it. Streets are full of magic, and you can still feel the atmosphere of the old town it was once ago. In many of these streets, you will be able to see fun traffic signs decorated with stickers.

On Verdi Street, for example, you will find a wide variety of restaurants with typical food from nearly every country. And if you want to change and visit the district of L’Eixample, you can walk along the Paseo de Sant Joan (last section of it) which connects both areas of Barcelona and was opened in 1929.

Squares, buildings, streets and parks. The neighborhood of Gracia in Barcelona is a meeting place where you will find culture, tradition and art to offer you an unforgettable day by visiting one of the most iconic districts in the city.

Everything about Opera in Barcelona

The opera is a theatrical music genre that is usually accompanied by stage action, or at least that is how it has been designated since its creation in the 16th century. In the opera, the drama is exploited with music and singing, focusing not so much on the plot or the action but on the reaction of the characters, which they express themselves through their spectacular voices. There are countries that are great exponents of the genre, such as Italy, Germany, France and Spain.

In Spain, the opera took longer to develop than in other European countries. Here there was a great spoken theater tradition and it was widely considered that incorporating music and singing would not improve the final product. However, great writers set out to compose serious theme operas that did not reach out to the public, until the launch of another type of opera: Opera buffa (comic opera). This kind of fun opera with lighter themes is what would lead to the creation of the Spanish opera genre: La Zarzuela.

Today there are still many theaters where you can see the opera or get to know the Spanish Zarzuela in Spain. In the Catalan capital there are two of the most important in the country, where you can have an incredible experience and move in time enjoying fascinating pieces of national and international opera.

Popular Opera Venues in Barcelona

El Palau de la Música Catalana

Where is it? C/Palau de la Música, 4-6, 08003 Barcelona
www.palaumusica.cat

El Palau de la Música Catalana is the headquarters of the “Orfeó Català”, a musical institution of bourgeois origin, founded in 1891 by Barcelona patrons and other music lovers. The building, located in the Sant Pere, Santa Caterina and La Ribera neighborhood, was designed by the Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and keeps the Catalan characteristic architectonic style, known as Catalan modernism. It is one of the must-sees in Barcelona for its impressive façade and sumptuous interiors. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.

Inside of El Palau de la Música Catalana we find the Sala Lluís Millet, the concert hall, the Petit Palau de Óscar Tusquets or the Library. The interiors are decorated with ceramic mosaics, a Catalan modernism technique while the windows are made of polychrome glass. The nature and the floral theme prevail in its coatings, another of the classic themes of this architectural style that we find throughout the city. In the different rooms we find glass lamps decorated with colorful mosaics, feminine busts, peacock figures and all kinds of sumptuous details. It is considered one the Catalan modernism greatest exponents because it combines all the different applied arts: sculpture, mosaic, stained glass and wrought iron.

El Palau has been the scene of the best operas and concerts that have traveled to the city of Barcelona and is an essential part of its cultural and artistic life. In EL Palau de la Música Catalana they also offer activities for children such as concerts. A special program for children was created with the goal of offering a shared musical experience for families, parents and children, as well as opening the world of classical music to the little ones.

Gran Teatre del Liceu

Where is it? La Rambla, 51-59, 08002 Barcelona
www.liceubarcelona.cat

On April 4, 1847, an artistic piece was performed for the first time at the recently inaugurated Teatre del Liceu, the most important and prestigious theater in the city of Barcelona. Since then, millions of people have passed through the Gran Teatre del Liceu, known simply as El Liceu, to enjoy some of the great plays and music ever created, as well as to enjoy its impressive architecture.

The original Liceu has a curious origin related to the military. In 1837, the Sociedad Dramática de Aficionados, a liberal organization of armed citizens created by members of the National Militia, decided to build a music conservatory in Barcelona. The city was in full economic development and soon this conservatory was converted into the Liceo Filarmónico Dramático Barcelonés from S.M. the Queen Isabel II, with the mission of cultivating music and singing in adition to the theatre. The Liceu soon became one of the main symbols of power, the nobility and the Catalan bourgeoisie.

The Liceu welcomes all types of artistic works, from theater plays to musicals, operas or zarzuelas. There are several types of seats from which to enjoy the shows at different prices. The most expensive are the private boxes, being the central part the best and pricier. On the higher and with less visibility areas, we find the seats with a more affordable price. On the web you can see the schedules. The visit to the Liceu is worth it, not only to enjoy the opera or music show, but to enjoy this architectural gem from the inside during the entrance, exit and in the intermission pause.

Here are some things to keep in mind if you visit the Liceu:

Tickets can be purchased at the box office, by phone or online.

There are up to 15 different rates for each of the 8 theater areas. Check the web to find the perfect place for you.

There is the possibility of buying season tickets.

The consumption of food and drink is prohibited, except in the Liceu cafeteria.

You can visit the Liceu without the need of catching a show.

Discover La Barceloneta, one of the most popular neighborhoods in Barcelona

We continue discovering the most emblematic areas of the Catalan capital and today we are going to get into La Barceloneta neighborhood, one of the most popular of Barcelona in the one that breathes a marine atmosphere and one enjoys the pier, the beach and a place with a lot of charm.

History of La Barceloneta neighborhood

To learn more about the history of La Barceloneta, we moved to the 15th century, when the breakwater of the port was built on a place that the land started to win the sea.

In October 1718 the Captain-General Marquis of Castel-Rodrigo established the creation of the neighborhood of the Beach (Barrio de la Playa). The goal was that people who had lost their homes after the demolition of buildings to build the citadel could have a new home. The project was entrusted to the military engineer Pròsper Verboom.

However, a new project (and definitive) began to be devised in 1749. As the website of the Barcelona City Council tells us, in this case, it was intended to order the constructions of the Arenal, to control the population militarily and to alleviate the situation of lack of housing in the walled city of Barcelona.

La Barceloneta is considered one of the best examples of Baroque urbanism in the whole Peninsula.

The activities of its inhabitants were closely linked to the sea, especially since the year 1754 the fishermen began to arrive at this site.

Until the mid-nineteenth century fishing and port activities were the predominant here. If you walk through the neighborhood, you can feel this marine origin on its streets. Although the neighborhood has been modernized by introducing new services, the truth is that this magical charm still exists.

What to do and visit in La Barceloneta neighborhood

Enjoy La Barceloneta Beach

The Barceloneta Beach has a central location and is easily accessible, which is why it is one of the favorites of locals and tourists who come to the city. It is one of the oldest in Barcelona and also, perhaps, the most famous.

Walk on the streets

If you want to move to that Barceloneta of yesteryear you just have to walk through its narrow streets. There you will see old buildings and establishments that still maintain the decoration of 200 years ago.

If you walk to the sea, you will observe that step by step the neighborhood is becoming more modern.

Visit the history museum, the Museu d’Història de Catalunya

Created in 1996 by the Government of the Generalitat of Catalonia, this museum presents a collection of documents and objects that will bring you closer to the history of the Catalan people and their culture.

The Museu d’Història de Catalunya has a permanent exhibition distributed in 7 stages, and several temporary exhibitions that will help you understand a little more about the history of Catalonia.

Go to the Clock Tower (Torre del Reloj)

The Clock Tower is considered the oldest building in the neighborhood. It was built in the year 1772 to become the lighthouse to guide ships on the darkest nights.

Towards the middle of the 19th century, specific improvements were made in the port of Barcelona, so the lighthouse ceased to be an indispensable element, but it was not demolished. However, a clock was placed in the highest part.

Go shopping in the Maremagnum

The Maremagnum is a shopping center that is located on the pier of Spain, at the Old Port of Barcelona. If you want to go shopping this will be your chosen place.

The Barceloneta park and the Torre de les Aigües

The Barceloneta park becomes a link between the sea area and the Ronda Litoral. In it, you will find a wide variety of plant species and you will see the Torre de les Aigües, a modernist building that was designed in 1907 by the architect Josep Domènech i Estapà.

Buildings in La Barceloneta area

During your tour of La Barceloneta, you will come across several buildings that are worth enjoying. For example, the Casa Josep Torras (Baluard Street 6), a house of Josep Graner that has been restored and where you can see sgraffito full of color; the
Casa Magi (Calle Balboa 14), with a façade in pale pink and neoclassical style, or the Esteve Cortada building (Marquès de la Quadra 3 street), in this case, yellow and decorated with plant motifs.

Where to eat in La Barceloneta neighborhood

Gastronomy is also part of the charm of La Barceloneta neighborhood in Barcelona. And there you will find restaurants and bars of many styles. Let’s review some options so you know what you can choose.

1. Segons Mercat

Specializing in seafood cuisine, Segons Mercat is located on Balboa Street. It is an ideal option if you are visiting the neighborhood, although you can also find other culinary options.

2. Vaso de Oro

Vaso de Oro is a traditional tapas bar in the neighborhood of La Barceloneta, which has its own beers. It is also located on Balboa Street.

3. La Mar Salada

La Mar Salada has a daily menu and a menu with paellas and other dishes of Mediterranean cuisine elaborated with fresh products. It is located in Paseo de Juan de Borbón.

4. Cal Pintxo

A renovated classic with terrace, Cal Pintxo is located in the building that houses the Museum of History of Catalonia (Museu d’Història de Catalunya) at Plaça Pau Vila, 1. It offers a menu of Mediterranean-style dishes.

5. Restaurante Salamanca

Salamanca is an emblematic establishment of La Barceloneta with more than 40 years of history. Located in Carrer de l’Almirall Cervera 34, it offers market and Mediterranean cuisine, paellas and fish selected in the port fish market.

6. Ca La Nuri

Rice and wine looking at the sea. Do you like the plan? It is what you can do if you sit down to eat on the terrace of Ca La Nuri. It is located on the seafront and specializes in seafood cuisine and rice dishes.

7. Can Paixano

Popularly known as the Xampanyeria (Champañería) in this small place located in Carrer de la Reina Cristina 7, you can taste tapas and sandwiches while savoring their delicious varieties of cava. You will be surprised how full it is always, but it is worth the experience.

Discover the District of L’Eixample in Barcelona

L’Eixample District is called in this way because the engineer and urban planner Ildefons Cerdà decided to widen Barcelona around the old town. The plans to expand the city with a strategy in mind is how this neighborhood emerged, one of the largest in the city. L’Eixample has was planned and built in a practically perfect grid. The characteristic octagonal blocks were a visionary street design for various reasons. The architect broadened the intersections for visibility, taking into account traffic and ventilation, now they are mostly used for short-term parking.

Plan of the L’Eixample District in Barcelona.

What you need to know about surrealism and the artist

Joan Miró i Ferrá was born in the city of Barcelona in 1893. He studied trade and worked in his parents’ shop until he decided he wanted to be a painter, thanks to the influence of artists such as Modest Urgell and Josep Pascó. He entered the Círculo Artístico de Sant Lluc, where he met the great European avant-garde trends of the time. But it was in Paris that he encountered the Dada movement, the origin of surrealism. His work was very influenced by this artistic movement, becoming one of its great representatives.

Always with his own language, loaded with sexuality, the artist developed his work on topics related to women and nature. Experimentation with materials and techniques, in addition to the overexposure of color and abstract forms, are part of his unique style.

In 1975 the artist opened La Fundació Joan Miró with the purpose of “giving artists a place to express themselves”. Today, there’s a great presence of Joan Miró in Barcelona, thanks to this foundation and 3 artworks he gave to the city: The El Prat airport Mural, the Pavimento Miró and La Dona i l’Ocell.

With this article we want to introduce you to the essence of Joan Miró in Barcelona that is still alive. Keep reading to know more about his artworks and the Fundació Joan Miró. And don’t miss them during your visit!

The presence of Joan Miró in Barcelona

Ceramic Mural – Terminal 2 of Barcelona Airport

Joan Miró wanted to “welcome tourists who arrived in Barcelona by land, sea and air”. That’s why all those who arrive to Barcelona by plane will have a very artistic welcome. In the façade of terminal 2 of the Barcelona airport there is a beautiful ceramic mural. For this artwork he collaborated with Llorens i Artigas, a well-known ceramist, with whom he created this impressive 5 meters high and 9 meters long piece. Colors, shapes and ceramics are intermingled in a work of great proportions, another of the characteristics of this multidisciplinary artist.

In 2016, the city of Barcelona debated about the name of the airport, with the name “Joan Miró” being one of the finalists. At the end, the airport remained under the name of Barcelona El Prat Airport, but the mural is still there.

Pavimento Miró (Mosaic) – Las Ramblas of Barcelona

Miró thought that visitors arriving by boat, after docking at the port, would walk up Las Ramblas to visit the La Boqueria Market. That is why the artist decided to plant his work at the exit of this well-known market, in the middle of Las Ramblas. It is a huge and colorful ceramic mosaic forming masses of color with the characteristic Miró style. With this work, Miró sought to make a representation of the universe through its colors and round shapes.

The work, despite being a mosaic, is known as the “Pavimento Miró”. Joan Miró knew that the mosaic would deteriorate with the passage of time and the footprints of the tourists but decided to do it anyway. Luckily, the city council has carried out various restoration works so that the Pavimento Miró does not lose its great artistic value.

La Dona i l’Ocell (The Woman and The Bird) – Parc Joan Miró

The third work that the Joan Miró gave to Barcelona and its citizens is in the former Parc de l’Escorxador, now known as the Parc Joan Miró. Inaugurated in 1983, this work is called “Dona i Ocell”. This 22-meter-high work represents two of the most repeated “themes” in the artist’s work: the woman and animals. The colorful and huge statue represents a woman with a bird on her head, something that at first glance can be a bit difficult to appreciate.

The outside of the monument is covered with ceramics and in its central part you can see various abstract forms about the sex of women. In this artwork you can also see two distinguished tributes. The first to the Ancient Rome phallic forms, symbol of fertility and health. On the other hand, Miró makes with this work a tribute to Antoni Gaudí, one of the most important architects in the history of Barcelona.

Fundació Joan Miró

How to get to the Fundació Joan Miró? Parc de Montjuïc, s / n, 08038 Barcelona
For more information: www.fmirobcn.org

The last of Miró’s gifts to the city is his contemporary art foundation. The foundation is a place that, as he himself said, is designed so that artists from all over the world have a place to express themselves and show their works. In addition to temporary exhibitions of all kinds, currently exhibits a huge archive with some of the best works of the Catalan artist. The foundation’s collection consists of more than 10,000 works of art including drawings, tapestries, sculptures and sketches that are exhibited in both temporary and permanent exhibitions. On the other hand, there are works by Miró in Germany, Tenerife, San Francisco or Tokyo, something that gives us an idea of the international reach of this artist.

As for the ticket to the exhibition, you should know that it is affordable, depending on the exhibition you visit, prices may range between 2,5 and 12 euros. The Fundació Joan Miró is in the Montjuic Mountain, so it is an almost obligatory stop if you are going to visit this area of Barcelona. It also organizes activities, courses and workshops related to the art world.

Before visiting La Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona, we recommend you visit the web and learn the different activities or temporary exhibitions that exist, to know what is the best thing available that day. Our advice is that you go with time to dive into the author’s work, get to know his life and enjoy the beautiful building and its surroundings. A great deal of the artistic life of the Catalan painter is in this Foundation that is, without a doubt, the best gift he could have ever made to his hometown.

Following Picasso’s tracks in Barcelona: his legacy in the city

Things you may not know about Picasso

Pablo Ruiz Picasso, internationally known as Picasso, was a Spanish painter and sculptor born in Málaga in 1881. Picasso stood out in the art world for his original approach and creating his own artistic path, as well as for his technique and the creation of his own school of painting, called cubism, that also influenced a lot of different artists through history.

Although he achieved world fame thanks to his paintings and sculptures, the artist from Málaga excelled in other fields such as drawing, engraving and illustration. Picasso also worked with ceramics, set design and props related to costumes for theatrical productions. A versatile talent that served to put Spanish art on the international map.

On April 8, 1871 he died in France leaving a legacy of more than 16,000 works that are exhibited in the most prestigious museums in the world, including the Picasso Museum in Barcelona.

Picasso’s tracks in Barcelona

Today’s art is shaped by Pablo Picasso’s paints. The Spanish artist had a long way to develop his own avant-garde style. In his sources of inspiration, Barcelona was a very influential step and a turning point in his life and art. Nowadays, if we walk through Barcelona, we can still follow Picasso’s tracks:

Picasso arrived in Barcelona in 1895. As a curious and energic teenager, he took part in the artistic boom going on in the city. Els Quatre Gats (“The Four Cats”) was a Bohemian pub where Picasso used to hang out. He did his first exhibition there. Located in a very surreal building, the place is now a restaurant where you can still appreciate its well conserved Art Nouveau aspect while you have lunch or dinner.

Picasso became a professional artist during his nine years in Barcelona and had different art studios in the oldest city´s neighborhood, the Gothic Quarter.

There he made friends and was influenced by main Catalan artists of that time like Ramón Casas and Pablo Gargallo.

In a former brothel in Barcelona, which is nowadays a Hostel called Levante, Picasso also used to enjoy the company and special services of beautiful women.

He even dedicated one of his famous paintings “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” to those ladies. However there were assumptions, that the painting was related to the French city “Avinyo”, there are facts, that it was all about this small street Carrer Avinyó in Barcelona.

If you keep your eyes opened, you will see a graffity of this same painting right next to the hostel.

The main expression of the artist’s ties to Barcelona is Picasso Museum, an exhibition which was created by the will of himself. This unique museum shows the majority of Picasso’s paints in his youngest age. You will find it in a huge Medieval palace in Born District, filled with parts of the historic Barcelona that will bring you right back to the Middle Ages. This museum is a must-visit for all the art lovers in the world.

Although Picasso moved to Paris already after nine years in 1904, he was very attached to Barcelona for the rest of his life and his mind found inspiration right at the same streets where people walk around in present.

The most outstanding artworks of Pablo Picasso in the museum of Barcelona

Ciencia y Caridad

Picasso Museum Barcelona, 1897.

Pablo Picasso painted “Ciencia y Caridad” when he was only 15 years old. According to the experts, it is one of Pablo’s last works before leaving the academic line, that is, the starting point in which the painter started experimenting trying to find his own artistic path. That is why this painting is so valuable, since it shows the artistic capacity of Picasso when he was only 15 years old and, on the other hand, the painting helps us to compare it with his other works and discover the origins of Picasso’s work. Named by experts as an art work of social realism, the malagueño focus on this painting in the the advance of the science.

La Espera (Margot)

Picasso Museum Barcelona, 1901

The exceptional technique and voracious hunger that Picasso felt when creating made him experiment with different techniques and styles. In this case “La Espera” shows with a pointillist tendency the nightlife of Paris that he met. Through the strokes of thick brush and the influences of Van Gogh, the Spanish painter created one of the most recognizable works of all his artistic work. Although it was exhibited in Paris, Margot currently resides in the Picasso Museum in Barcelona.

Desamparados

Picasso Museum Barcelona, 1903

Another recurring theme in Picasso’s work, especially in the early 1900s, was motherhood. In this work, Picasso pays a conscious tribute to Greco’s technique through the hand that protects the baby from the cold. “Desamparados” is a painting in which Picasso wanted to show how difficult it was to bear the burden that society imposed on mothers. Two contrasting aspects stand out in his painting: the light that illuminates the faces with respect to the little expressiveness of their looks and faces. A psychologically hard work that shows the “more human” side of the Spanish artist.

Retrato de Benedetta Bianco

Picasso Museum Barcelona, 1906

Benedetta Bianco was the wife of Ricard Canals, one of Pablo Picasso’s best friends. She agreed to pose for the artist to help him in one of his works for which he needed references. During the posing for the artwork “Un Palco en los Toros”, the painter decided to draw her. In this portrait you can see a remarkable influence of the artistic works of Ricard Canals. It is a frontal portrait whose focus is on Benedetta’s face and her gesture, as well as other physical aspects of the protagonist, such as her black hair, the look and the veil.

Harlequin

Picasso Museum Barcelona, 1917

It is a portrait in the style of Benedetta Bianco, especially in the composition and the format. “Arlequín” (in Spanish) is a frontal portrait in which Picasso tries to reflect his most comic part, while showing at the same time what he tries to hide from the world. The Harlequin represents that comical and burlesque figure as a metaphor of the artist interior that gives us an idea of what Picasso sees when he looks himself in the mirror. As a curiosity, it is noteworthy that this work was created in Barcelona and was also the first one that was displayed in the museum that receives the artist name.

Las Meninas

Picasso Museum Barcelona, 1957

This is a tribute to another of the greatest Spanish artists of all time, Velázquez. This series of paintings embody several characteristics of the author’s work, such as the space and perspective of the art work. The most remarkable changes that exist with the original painting are the change of format from horizontal to vertical, the simplification of the protagonists and the strong points of light that enter the painting through the windows. If we look at Diego Velázquez’s painting we can see that the windows are closed, while in the work of the author from Málaga these are open, becoming some of the strongest points of the painting.

Barcelona’s most popular food markets to eat during your trip

The markets have played a fundamental role in the social life of the Spaniards for many years, especially food markets. During ancient times, these places were the meeting points where neighbors discussed the latest news from abroad, managed the day to day of the community and socialized among them. In addition, they bought fresh and quality products that would become the weekly menu at home.

Today the food markets in Barcelona play a similar role: these markets are neighbors social centers where you can buy fresh products and discover new things. But also have become one of the most popular attractions for tourists. Today, in these markets you can find organic, varied and exotic products that you can buy and take away, or even eat there directly thanks to the bars, restaurants and food stalls that you will find inside. It’s a good choice to eat in the markets, a lot of locals do it!

If you are going to visit the city, here you will find the best food markets in Barcelona where you can eat (or simply visit). A real treat for your senses and a magical experience that shows you a little bit more about the locals’ lifestyle.

Six food markets in Barcelona you shouldn’t miss

1. Mercat de Sant Josep – La Boquería Food Market

Where is it? La Rambla, 91, 08001 Barcelona

When you think of food markets in Barcelona, La Boquería comes directly to your head. Located in the same Rambla Avenue, it is the most central and popular food market in Barcelona. Its great advantage is how well it is located and the wide variety of products it offers, while its great disadvantage is that it is always crowded. Even so, we recommend you visit La Boquería Market and get to know the Kiosk Universal, the most traditional bar in the market. Millions of locals and visitors have sat on their high stools to enjoy their grilled squid, their scrambled eggs with mushrooms and their seafood paellas. You can also try Pinotxo Bar or El Quim, 2 of the main places to eat a good variety of Catalan cuisine.

Special recommendation: A grilled shrimp, clams, mussels and squid grill for € 30? Sign me in.

2. Mercat de Santa Caterina – Santa Caterina Food Market

Where is it? Avinguda de Francesc Cambo 16 Ciutat Vella, Parc, 08003 Barcelona, Spain

The Santa Caterina food market stands out for its numerous organic and vegetarian options. It is an assorted and very colorful market, located almost in the very center of Barcelona and where you can find products of all kinds. But if you want to eat well, we recommend that you look inside for the bar L’Univers, a family restaurant specializing in tapas and seafood of all kinds. At L’Univers you can order chistorra (fried spicy sausage), omelets of all kinds, croquettes and dumplings, and rest assured that everything will be homemade. Simple but delicious cuisine, direct from the market to your mouth.

Special recommendation: Order navajas (seafood) and grilled squid if you really want to know the meaning of the word “fresh”.

3. Mercat de Sants – Sants Food Market

Where is it? Carrer de Sant Jordi, 6, 08028 Barcelona

The Sants neighborhood is full of simple salt-of-the-earth people who know how to enjoy life. And the same could be said about their food market. Sants Food Market is a real social center where you can do all the shopping that people in the neighborhood need, thus favoring local commerce. The Sants Food Market has up to 35 food stalls and 14 clothing and accessories stalls. And besides all this, you can visit the bar Montero, the best place to eat in the whole market. Specializing in seafood and fideuà, this classic bar has an extensive menu of dishes that they begin to prepare from 4 AM every day. That’s why when you arrive you will not be able to decide between trying the cod with mongetes (Catalonian beans), the rice dishes, the Rioja potatoes and much more.

Special recommendation: The fideuà!

4. Mercat de Sant Antoni – Sant Antoni Food Market

Where is it? Carrer del Comte d’Urgell, 1, 08011 Barcelona

The Mercat de Sant Antoni is one of the great icons of the classical Barcelona. Built in 1882, this neighborhood center has been under construction for over 8 years after various Roman ruins were found during its remodeling. It is planned to reopen to the public during 2018. Meanwhile, the provisional market of Sant Antoni is located right next door, in the middle of Avenida Sant Antoni, and has not changed its classic food stalls or the iconic Casa Blanca Bar. In this bar located inside the market you can savor delicious homemade cannelloni, choose from a long list of fish and seafood or sautéed seasonal, mainly mushrooms and seafood. And get ready, because the reformed Mercat de Sant Antoni is going to be even more impressive.

Special recommendation: Do not leave without trying Grandma’s fried snails.

5. Mercat del Ninot – El Ninot Food Market

Where is it? Carrer de Mallorca, 133, 08036 Barcelona

The Mercat del Ninot, located near Hospital Clínic, is a popular food market that offers practically everything. Between its stalls we can find fruit, vegetables, meat, preserved foods, clothes, toys, art and design, costume jewelry and much more. Among the things you can find in the Ninot Market there is a stall called Carns Morales, a specialized meat stand that allows you to take your meat home as well as eat it right there. Your menu consists of sirloins, hamburgers and delicious milanesas that you can accompany with salads, wine, bread and dessert for a more than reasonable price.

Special recommendation: The homemade croquettes

6. Mercat de la LLibertat – Freedom Food Market

Where is it? Plaça de la Llibertat, 27, 08012 Barcelona

The municipal market of the Vila de Gràcia was baptized as the Freedom Market in homage to the French Revolution values. It is one of the most traditional Barcelona markets, given that its architecture follows the style of Catalan modernism. The market was constructed in that spot because it was the square in which the peasants came from the mountains and gathered to sell their products. In addition to finding the classic food stalls, inside the market you can find Joan Noi and his bar. In this great fish stand, its owner offers to prepare it the food in the spot, being able to choose between rations of prawns, squid in its sauce and even rice dishes.

Special recommendation: the most popular dish is the tuna with walnut sauce.

Do you really want to enjoy your visit? Try one of these incredible food markets in Barcelona! You won’t regret it!
