Up until recently, Barcelona received fairly low marks in the coffee department but the city’s game has been upped for a few years now. There are some great independent places in town where you can get a really good coffee; from hipster kiosks to seafront chiringuitos.

Yes, if you’re spending some time in Barcelona then satisfying your coffee fix should mean more than just going to a chain like Costa. And with so much to see and do, you’ll be needing that caffeine boost. Here are 5 of our picks for the best independent places in town where you can get a great cup of specialty coffee.

We’ve focused on six key districts in central Barcelona and picked out an independent cafe for each.

Nomad’s Coffee Lab (Born)

News & Coffee Kiosk (Eixample)

Satan’s Coffee (Gotic)

A little oasis in the heart of the city, Bar Central is linked to the bookshop of the same name, ‘La Central’, and includes one of the most idyllic enclosed terraces in the old town, filled with plants, fountains and birds.

The entry is a bit inconspicuous and the gardens can’t be seen from the main street so this is known to locals as one of the city’s best kept secrets. Relax here in the tranquil surroundings and enjoy some of the best coffee in town.

Note the people behind Satan’s Coffee seem to have taken over the management (see 4).

Nomad’s Coffee is tucked away in one of the Born neighbourhood’s cutest little streets, which links the picturesque lanes of Born to the elegant boulevards of the Eixample. It’s hard to find this one, unless you’re in the know.

This is a place for real enthusiasts: they roast their own beans and the menu is extensive, with experimental coffee varieties co-existing with the more typical types.

A top tip is to not try and visit here too late, when the Pasaje closes and all the shops on it have to close too. Arrive before 5pm. Otherwise, you might have to retreat to a Costa!

The smallest place of the bunch, and just a kiosk with great coffee to take away. Don’t be deceived by the small size though: the coffee menu is pretty diverse and sophisticated – including the now-obligatory flat white.

If you like to enjoy your coffee with a decent read, you can also find hip (and difficult to find) lifestyle magazines for sale here in English and Spanish, like Wallpaper, Monocle and The New Yorker.

Another mention for Satan’s coffee. This space in Gotic is perhaps the most hipster-endorsed on this list, if you like that sort of thing. And, even if you don’t, it does have an ever-changing menu of top-quality coffees and also some Asian-influenced breakfast dishes to enjoy. Why not combine your machiatto with a traditional Japanese breakfast, with miso soup?

Despite being in the most touristy part of town, this one is deceptively difficult to find. It’s situated in an obscure corner of Gotic that tends to get overlooked by the crowds.

A bit further from the center, but still worth a look, Poblenou was recently voted one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world by TimeOut magazine. There are lots of chic industrial spaces, bars and restaurants to visit in the area – and Skye Coffee is a great place for coffee.

Actually, Skye Coffee is less a place and more of a truck (a 1972 Citroën HY), which is located inside a warehouse for coworking and collaboration (Espacio 88). Expect a unique ambience, high ceilings, and one of the best flat whites in town.

Those are our picks but remember, because the scene in Barcelona is so lively at the moment, new places are opening all the time. And we’ve only covered some key barrios so check the latest information for your area too if it’s not covered.

And if you’re looking for a special way of getting about Barcelona, as well as some specialty coffee, then you can take a look at our Barcelona Segway Tours!

What to take to Barcelona: a Packing List for Barcelona in Summer

Although it seems logical, before visiting Barcelona you must take under consideration the weather during your trip. After all, you need to be ready and bring everything you might need to enjoy your trip to the fullest.

Barcelona has more than 3,000 hours of sun per year and temperatures and humidity are usually high during the day and also during the night. The terraces, parks, and beaches are always a nice place to have a break during your Summer trip.

What to Pack on a Trip to Barcelona in Summer

If you want to know how to make the ideal suitcase for your holidays in Barcelona, do not miss the following list:

Sun Lotion

In the middle of the Summer (July and August) Barcelona gets very hot. Day and night, the city has high and intense temperatures. Sunscreen is an essential element of your suitcase. You don’t want to end up with a major sunstroke, do you? UV rays are dangerous, not only in Summer but during the whole year. They can cause sunburns and skin damage among other injuries, so you need to be aware of being protected all the time. We recommend you using sunscreen regardless of whether it’s Summer or winter. Even when the day is cloudy, use the sun lotion. Your skin will be thankful.

Sunglasses

We have already talked about how much the sun can hurt. But, since most of the people seem to not have enough respect for the sun, here is another great hazard: the damage in your eyes. UV rays can affect your corneas, affecting your sight, especially if you look at the sun directly. That’s why good sunglasses are so important. The hottest hours of the day are between 12 PM and 6 PM, so make sure you have them on your backpack before setting foot on the streets. Remember: to visit Barcelona and enjoy its monuments you will need a healthy couple of eyes.

Summer Clothes

Barcelona has great weather even when it’s not Summer. That’s why you should be prepared when coming to Barcelona in Summer, especially about your clothes. We are not just talking about shorts, sandals or flip-flops. It’s important for you to pack the appropriate clothing for the season: bikini or swimsuit for the beach or pool, a hat to protect yourself from the sun during your tours or at the beach, and light clothes made with natural fibers, if possible, like shirts or dresses. Barcelona is a city with high humidity, with which the heat intensifies, but there are also some nights during the Summer when the temperature drops a little and the sea breeze can make you feel chilly. So make sure to bring a light sweater for these nights if you do not want to catch a Summer cold. And last but not least, a towel for the beach! Hotels in Barcelona provide you with towels, but normally these are for the room and also for the pool. So you may need one at least for the beach. You can check it with your hotel before coming.

Comfortable Shoes

Remember Nancy Sinatra´s song “These boots are made for walking”? Well, that’s exactly what you need to bring to Barcelona. Visiting a city means walking a lot, so remember to wear your most comfortable shoes. If you buy shoes in Barcelona and you want to wear them during your visit, buy some bandages in case you are going to walk a lot with them. New shoes need a little time to adjust to your feet. Sneakers or soft shoes will do the trick.

A Good City Guide of Barcelona

Getting lost in Barcelona is very easy because, despite its excellent distribution, it can give you the feeling that all buildings are the same, especially if it is the first time you visit it. To avoid this, make sure you bring a good guide. There are especial guides that have not only the location of the monuments and the distribution of the streets but a lot of additional touristic information. A tip: use the mountain and the sea location for orientation. They are always up and down the city!

A Plug Adapter

This is something that people never consider when they come to Barcelona. In Spain (and the rest of Europe, except for the United Kingdom) the plugs are of the F type (two parallel holes). Your hotel might have a spare one for you to borrow, but since most of the tourist forget too, they probably won’t have any. In airports, they sell very cheap adapters of different types. And also there are some stores in Barcelona where you can buy a plug adapter. Anyway, it would be better if you bring one from home. Otherwise, forget about charging your phone, laptop or electric toothbrush. The horror!

Camera to Take Pictures

We can’t trust our memory, that’s why they invented pictures and cameras. Barcelona is one of the most photographed cities in the world because of its beauty. You will need a good camera to immortalize all those monuments and happy memories with your travel partners. Keep it always at your site during the visit, so you can capture all the beautiful Barcelona views without having to worry about losing it.

Selfie Stick

Sometimes it’s difficult to take pictures of yourself with the whole background, especially when it’s a group photo. That’s why our recommendation is to use a flexible tripod with remote control or a selfie stick. They sell them in almost every Barcelona souvenir store, but it be will cheaper if you bring it from home. The other choice is bothering people asking them to take a picture of you. You can do that, but the selfie stick will allow you to spend more time and work on the perfect snap.

Money in cash

Nowadays you can travel with just credit or debit cards. In Barcelona, it is common for people to pay with a card and most establishments have data phones, although sometimes with a minimum purchase amount. Ask before in the markets. There are lots of stores and restaurants in markets that only accept money in cash. However, it never hurts to carry cash (in this case it would be euros, Europe official currency), at least to buy simple things such as bottles of water, snacks or souvenirs. It will be so much easier.

Conversation guide in Spanish and/or Catalan

In Barcelona, there are two official languages, Castilian (also known as Spanish), the official language in most of the country, and Catalan, the language of Catalonia. Having a guide with basic phrases in both idioms will come in handy. In addition, Catalans feel very proud of their language and talking a little bit it’s a good way to meet local people. Having an internet connection in your smartphone that would allow you to connect with google translator at any time would also be a great idea. Just in case.

Enjoy your Summer Trip!

Top Chiringuitos and Beach Bars in the Catalan Capital

Barcelona’s beach bars and chiringuitos are the perfect spot to chill out over the summer months. You can eat and drink as much as you like, all while taking in the sights and sounds that are associated with beach life.

There are many Barcelona beach bars, though, making it difficult if you’re trying to find the best chiringuitos Barcelona has to offer. But we’re here to help. Here’s a closer look at the very best spots that you will love.

Barcelona Beach Bars and Chiringuitos for this Summer

Bambú Beach Bar

When it comes to the best beach bars in Barcelona, Bambú Beach Bar is a breathtaking option. Inspired by the relaxed and paradisiacal vibes of Southeast Asia, the bar has adopted the magic and strength of the region.

A fresh and relaxed spirit awaits, giving you amazing views of the Mediterranean that can be enjoyed while indulging in the very best drinks and cocktails. As nice additions, you’ll also find that free wi-fi is on offer, sports events are shown on the terrace, and that children are comfortably welcomed.

Where is it? Ronda Litoral
Website

Café del Mar Barcelona

This Barcelona beach cocktail bar is a little further out of the way on the outskirts of the city, but it’s definitely worth a visit. This place offers an exclusive atmosphere by the iconic Ibizan powerhouse Café del Mar.

The beach bar is one of the hottest spots in Barcelona. A private swimming pool awaits with luxurious beds around it and fantastic live DJs perform each day over the course of the summer. Café del Mar is the place to be if you look for a chic and exclusive vibe in Barcelona.

Where is it? Maremagnum-Moll d’Espanya, 5
Website

La Guingueta

When it comes to beach chiringuitos Barcelona has a lot of options but this is one of the most intriguing. Located at the Bogatell Beach, this place was initially created by Carles Abellan – one of Barcelona’s foremost chefs – and Joan Escribà – a recognized pastry chef – as an homage to the tradition of the chiringuito.

You will find a huge range of delicious and traditional tapas on offer, as well as many alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink options. If you want to blend together traditional Spanish cuisine with your chiringuito experience, this is a really strong option we’re sure that you’ll love.

Where is it? Av. del Litoral, 62
Website

You just landed in Barcelona. You got your luggage, your kids, family, friends or travel-partners and everybody is ready to go to the city. But, how to get from Barcelona Airport to Barcelona Center?

As in any other large European city, there are many options to go from the airport to the center of the city. Depending on the reason of your trip (tourism, business or pleasure) and your budget, you can make your choice. The options we bring you today vary from each other on price, availability and the amount of time until arriving to your destination. It usually takes 20 minutes from the airport of Barcelona to the center of the city but, of course, it also depends on the traffic, the weather or possible delays in the train schedules.

Options for getting from Barcelona Airport to Barcelona Center

1. Barcelona Taxi

The simplest option, yet one of the most expensive ones, is the taxi. The taxi in Barcelona is recognizable for its colors, black and yellow, and it’s usually a good service, with professional and friendly cab-drivers. One great pro of the taxi is that they can adapt to any special need regarding the transportation of people or luggage. The con is that traveling from the airport to the city or vice versa, comes with an extra fee. The price of the taxi trip is 30 euros from T2 and 35 euros from T1.

In addition, it is easy finding taxis because they queue on the outside of the terminal, although depending of the time of the day or night, it might get tricky. The approximate duration is about 25 minutes and the different taxi professionals are working all night, so if you arrive on a late night flight, do not worry, there will always be one available for you.

2. Metro Barcelona

There is a line that connects Barcelona Airport (El Prat) with the regular Metro lines of Barcelona Center. The color of this line is orange and it’s called Line 9. This Metro line goes from T1 and T2 to Zona Universitaria. With L9 you can stop and change to other subway lines to get to the centre of Barcelona.

First, it crosses with L1, the red one, at Torrassa Station. It’s a great and fast to get to or from the airport because the red line has a stop at Plaza España and another one at Plaza Catalunya, the center of the city. You can also stop at Collblanc Station, where the subway line crosses with the blue one, called L5. This line can take you directly to Diagonal Station, above Las Ramblas. As a third option, you can stop at Zona Universitaria and change to the green line, L3. The green line will take you to Plaza Espanya, Plaza Catalunya, Passeig de Gràcia, and other locations in the centre of Barcelona.

Bear in mind that there is an extra to access the airport. The total cost is 5,15€, so the difference with the ticket you purchased will be charged to you in the Terminal entrance.

For more information about the metro in Barcelona check this link.

3. Private car

Have you ever noticed those people in the airport exit carrying signs with names written on it? Those are private drivers, also known as chauffeurs. Hiring a private car is another way to get from the Airport to the center of Barcelona.

There are different agencies that provide this service, a premium service, which means it’s not going to be cheap, so we would recommend this option only as an emergency, or if you are on a business trip and you need efficiency combined with class and style. The driver will be waiting for you at the exit of your boarding gate to help you with your luggage and take you to your awesome car!

4. Uber and Cabify

Companies such as Uber and Cabify offer car rides at very good prices. You can book them by smartphone and make them wait outside of the terminal, just as the private cars.

Uber is back in Barcelona after having left the market in 2019. Now following regulations established by Catalan Government. Among others, bookings should be made a minimum of 15 minutes in advance of the pickup. However, Cabify will only apply this time restriction when the customer makes the first reservation. So, it’s easy to manage it when you go out of your plane walking to the waiting area.

This option to get from Barcelona Airport to Barcelona Center is usually cheaper than a taxi, but more expensive than the metro or the bus. It can be a good alternative if you are travelling with a big group and/or big bags because the price doesn’t change for luggage as it does when you take a taxi.

5. Rodalies RENFE Barcelona

The trip on the RENFE train is very comfortable because of the coziness of its seats to its general convenience since it stops at Barcelona Sants, Passeig de Gràcia or Clot, some of the most centric trains stops in the city. Plus, from there you can take the metro or bus and continue your trip until reaching your destination.

Despite being direct, the trip in the RENFE train takes about 25 minutes in both directions. During your trip in the train you can enjoy the air conditioning, the bar, read the newspaper, have some coffee or just watch the views of the Barcelona surroundings through the window. A great way to start your trip!

If you need more information about the train schedules, check here.

6. Aerobús

Is there a direct bus from Barcelona center to the airport? Yes, it’s called Aerobus, it doesn’t make any stops and only takes passengers that need to go to T1 or T2. Aerobus has two main stops for you to get in, located in Plaza de España and Plaza de Cataluña and throughout the day, it passes every 5-10 minutes. So, you don’t need to run to get one, because you won’t have to wait long for the next one.

The Aerobus, as the taxis, is on the outside of the airport and it’s very easy to spot. Each trip cost 5,90€ and you can buy the ticket for going back too. It’s a great option to get from Barcelona Airport to Barcelona Center that must be considered carefully: it’s a little more expensive than a regular bus or the metro, but it’s more comfortable and quick.

46 is the number of the regular bus that takes you from the Barcelona airport to the center of the city. Its main advantage is the price since you can get in and make a trip with the same MetroCard that you can use on the subway and the regular buses.

If you choose this bus is because you prefer to take a little bit more of time in the trip but paying less money. Your schedule is from 04:50 AM until 23:50 PM, and as we told you before, you can use the regular T10 Metro Card to make a trip. The bus will make several stops in industrial parks, wastelands and factories, but don´t you worry, the last stop is the airport.

For more information, check the route here.

8. Nitbus Barcelona

Don’t worry if your flight arrives to Barcelona between 10 PM and 5 AM. You still have several options to go to the city: the taxi, the private car or the best, the NitBus (night bus). On this bus, you can use your T10 Metro-card, and you will find it at the exit of both terminals.

The price of the bus is 2.20 euros for the single ticket, so it is a cheap option that works fine, since it stops both at Plaza España and Plaza de Cataluña. At that time of the night, the NitBus usually takes about 20 minutes, depending on the traffic, that is much lighter than during the day. So, if you want a convenient and economical option to get to the center of Barcelona from El Prat Airport between 10 and 5 in the morning, this is your bus!

If you need more information about the Nitbus, check this link.

9. Car Rental in Barcelona

There is always the option of renting a car for the whole trip. But we won’t recommend it since it’s very hard to find parking in Barcelona, it can become very expensive and it’s not the best option for the environment.

These are the options to get to the center of Barcelona from El Prat airport. We hope this information is useful to you! And if you want make the best of your visit, don’t forget to book a Montjuïc Segway Tour and enjoy this great city!

Port Olímpic: Barcelona’s best seafood restaurants for fresh fish dishes

Spain is the second biggest consumer of fish and seafood in the world, after Japan. In every region of the country, especially those that are seaside, there are fish and seafood dishes available in almost every bar and restaurant. The Spanish sea gastronomy is very rich and diverse, from expensive dishes to tasty snacks. There are fish casseroles, enormous seafood combos called “mariscadas” and all kind of preserved fish and seafood, such as anchovies, sardines and cockles.

If you love fish and seafood as much as we do, we invite you to visit some of the most notorious restaurants in the Catalan capital; Barcelona’s best seafood restaurants where you can get fresh fish every day of the week. Some of them are located near the sea, so you not only get to enjoy the taste, but also the gorgeous views of areas like the Barcelona Olympic Harbour.

A nice view gets even more attractive with the delicious taste of fried shrimps in your mouth. So, if you don’t want to miss this experience, check the list below with the best seafood restaurants in the Port Olimpic of Barcelona, and start to salivate.

With premises full of big rooms, large windows and with a unique decoration, Maná 75º is an ideal place to enjoy a seafood dish while staring at the Mediterranean Sea. The restaurant is famous for their fish rice and paellas, without forgetting the fideuas (a dish like the paella but with noodles instead of rice).

Galicia is a region of Spain located in the north of the country. It’s famous in the whole world for nurturing the best fish in their coasts and the best seafood in their marshlands. Anywhere you go, if you bump into a Galician restaurant, we recommend you try it, like Barcelona’s La Taberna Gallega. With a tavern lounge with capacity for 60 guests, a terrace for 52 and a terrace lounge for more than 250 guests, we are sure that you will find the perfect spot for you. Rice, seafood, octopus and turbot stand out in their menu, plus their high-quality steaks and their galician wines such as the Albariño and the Verdejo.

4. AGUA

Where is it? Passeig Marítim, 30
grupotragaluz.com/en/restaurant/agua

The name of this seafood restaurant in Barcelona means water, but that doesn’t mean you have to order it for drinking. AGUA is located in the Barcelona seafront, where the monkfish, hake and stew are the main protagonists. They allegedly brought back the Barceloneta spirit, meaning that they offer the type of menu and the atmosphere from what the neighborhood used to be in the 80-90´s, before the arrival of the tourism wave. They offer a diverse menu, a young spirit decoration and a fast service with very friendly staff. If you are a beach-person more than a port-person, go get some AGUA!

5. La Fonda del Port Olímpic

Where is it? Moll de Gregal, 7-10
lafondadelport.com

La Fonda del Port Olimpic is very well-known seafood restaurant in Barcelona because it does what is colloquially called “la compra” (the purchase). La compra means that the restaurant managers buy everyday the freshest products of the market and that’s what they offer on the menu. It doesn’t depend on prices, menus or any other reason but what´s fresh. That’s why every time you go to La Fonda is an adventure. The product offered is divided into fish and seafood of the day, premium meats made on the grill and an economic daily menu for 13 euros.

6. El Cangrejo Loco

Where is it? Moll de Gregal, 29 – 30
www.elcangrejoloco.com

The Cangrejo Loco (The Crazy Crab) is the perfect place to enjoy with all your friends. The kitchen is prepared to cook individual menus, “My way” menus for up to 12 people or menus for events and special meals for more than 12 people. In addition, you can also enjoy maximum discretion in their private rooms or eating on their terraces while staring at the Mediterranean Sea. They are famous for their Suquet de rape (Monkfish Suquet), fish rices and wines. Plus, the walls are covered by cool vintage pictures of the 1992 Olympic games.

7. Arenal

Where is it? Passeig Marítim La Barceloneta, s/n
www.arenalrestaurant.com

High cuisine, fresh product, great service and sea views. That’s what Arenal restaurant has to offer to all the seafood lovers out there. Their dishes of rice and fish are very popular, and they get a lot of business thanks to their capacity to organize social events and weddings. They have several choices for their menus, one daily and one executive, so you can make the best choice for the time of the day. Our recommendation is to enjoy its terrace and order some of their fish grills, the cod or the rice.

8. Touché

Where is it? Carrer de la Marina, 19 Local 1 D
www.touchebcn.com

Touché is one of the quirkiest options of this list, that’s why it’s coming in the last place. Located in the Carrer de la Marina, it´s menu combines seafood, fish and other product in an original and avant-garde cuisine, a little far from the classic fish restaurants. Honorary mention for their cocktails, prepared by the mixologist Marc López, and with an acid touch of fruits and citrus. A terrific ending for a fresh fish or seafood meal!

Enjoy your seafood!
We hope you like our selection with Barcelona’s best seafood restaurants around the Port Olímpic.
If you are visiting Barcelona, you will enjoy these places. They usually have a daily menu, but you can also choose other dishes from the carte. Don’t think it so much and try one of them. You won’t regret it!

Best things to do in Montserrat, Barcelona

The Montserrat Mountain is the most important and significant in Catalonia, with a height of 1.236 meters above sea level (the highest peak). It is located 50 km from the center of Barcelona, between the regions of Anoia, Baix Llobregat and Bages. Without a doubt, it is one of the indisputable symbols of the natural wealth of the Catalan geography.

Located in this famous mountain, we find the Monastery of Santa María de Montserrat. This Benedictine monastery is visited by thousands of people every day, who come to make their prayers to the Virgin of Montserrat, nicknamed “La Moreneta” because of its dark skin color. Legend has it that the Virgin has this color due to the smoke of a large number of candles that for centuries were lit before her image.

There are a lot of ways and combinations to get from Barcelona to Montserrat. Of course, the first option would be the car. It is not complicated, and all GPS systems have the location registered. In addition, the Montserrat Mountain has a free parking with 900 spots for cars and buses. You can also arrive at Montserrat with the FGC trains from Barcelona and other towns around.

The Virgin of Montserrat is beloved in Catalonia, to the point that she has her own anthem, entitled “Virolai”, also known as “Rosa d’abril” in reference to the first verses. It is a popular song that emerges from a Jacinto Verdaguer poem, the most important and representative Catalan poet of the 19th century. This song is taught to children in schools and is usually sung in choral schools, choirs, and even popular festivals.

Montserrat mountain is a great visit since it combines nature, history, and exercise. Is one of the most beautiful natural areas in Catalonia, and you can feel the tranquility and solemnity of the monastery. Once you have visited it, there are several routes in Montserrat that you can take to explore the surroundings and find the different chapels hidden in the mountains.

What to do in Montserrat?

Here is the list with the 8 best things to do in Montserrat.

1. Rack Railway or funicular

If you are going to Montserrat from Barcelona, you can go to the Plaza España metro station, where an FGC Train (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya) passes every hour. With the train, you’ll stop at the bottom of the mountain, and then you must decide how you would like to get to the monastery.

Aeri de Montserrat – Cable Car – source: www.aeridemontserrat.com

You have two options: the rack railway or the ‘Aeri de Montserrat’ cable car. The first is a regular train, meanwhile the second will take you on an impressive trip over the valley of the Llobregat River, up the mountain and to the Monastery of Montserrat. A good thing about the train is that it allows you to fully enjoy the natural environment since it connects the FGC Station in Monistrol de Montserrat with the monastery. The trip takes 15 minutes and the usual frequency for the trains passing from Monistrol Vila is 20 minutes.

2. Visit the local market

On the way to the monastery of Montserrat, there is this great market where they sell typical products only. In their stands, we find typical Catalan products of the area, to the point that the same person that farmed it is now selling it to you. What can be more natural than that? Natural, artisan and direct trade. Among its variety of products, we will find typical products such as oil, liquor, honey, cheese, and cottage cheese.

3. Enjoy the art museum

The Montserrat Museum has the artistic and archaeological heritage of the thousand-year-old Abbey of Montserrat. It has permanent exhibitions that show the history of the Monastery and the most representative artworks of each period, including works by important artists such as Pablo Picasso or Salvador Dalí, among others. It also offers traveling exhibitions, chosen by the best experts. If you like art and you have time, it is worth visiting.

Admission price: Adults: 7€, Students, pensioners and groups (minimum 20 people): 6€, Children (from 8 to 16 years old): 4€.

4. Visit the monastery and La Moreneta

The monastery gives you the opportunity to see the Virgin Mary statue up close by entering the chapel. To do this you have to queue with the rest of the people since only one person is allowed inside the chapel at once. Tradition says you must touch the ball she carries in one of her hands and then make a wish. Many students touch it during exams periods, or people with health problems, love or money.

5. Walking through the Camí dels Degotalls

A good way to get to the monastery is going through the Camí dels Degotalls. It is an achievable road, ideal to do with children. To get there, you must go by road, following the direction of Monistrol. The route is decorated with evocative majolica sculptures, plus trees such as oaks, yews or grasses.

Montserrat Monastery – source: Flickr

6. Listen to L’ Escolania

The Escolania de Montserrat is another typical Montserrat symbol. It is a choir entirely composed of 14 years old kids. This choir is one of the oldest in the whole country, and there are files from the 14th century that document its existence as an institution. The boy’s choir is internationally known. In their website you can find the schedule for their live performance in Montserrat, in addition to the concert tours, they often do.

7. Visiting the Santa Cova

The road that goes to Santa Cova from the monastery is one of the prettiest, shortest and easiest to visit in Montserrat. However, you can always use the funicular train if you happen to be out of breath. The road ends at Santa Cova, a small chapel where, according to the legend, the Montserrat Virgin statue was found for the first time.

Montserrat Views in Autumn – source: Pixabay

8. Rock-climbing the mountain

Montserrat is one of the most popular climbing spots in Catalonia and in the whole country. The reason for its popularity in Spain is because of its size: 7 kilometers long and 2.5 kilometers wide, with more than 5.000 open roads to choose. In addition to this, it’s located in almost the center of Catalonia, being near three of the main cities of the region: Barcelona, Manresa, and Terrassa. That means that you will find mostly local climbers. The best month to climb is usually October (not as hot as the summer), and most of the climbers choose the south section, in areas such as Vermell del Xincarró, el Clot del Boixar or L’Agulla del Senglar.

Barcelona is not only in the summer months one of the best holiday destinations. Also during the winter season, it’s got a lot to offer! The sunny days with a clear and blue sky are just made for a fantastic fun day, skiing the pistes close to Barcelona! There are many Spanish and Andorran resorts near Barcelona that offer great skiing from the end of November until the end of March.

Skiing close to Barcelona – Where to go

La Molina and La Masella

The top ski areas close to Barcelona, La Molina (50km pistes) and La Masella (61km pistes), are fantastic for day skiing trips from Barcelona. They are both in the Pre-Pyrenees mountain range and can be reached within two hours by car or bus and it is also possible to get to La Molina by train which also departs from Barcelona.

The Rodalies Renfe transportation offers a package to La Molina, which includes a train and ski-pass (forfeit) and can be bought at all Renfe railway stations in Barcelona. If you want to go skiing close to Barcelona during a weekday, you will enjoy the luxury of empty pistes and no lift lines. During the weekend it’s a bit more crowded but still, nothing compared to the Alps.

Grandvalira

A larger ski area is the resort Grandvalira in Andorra in the Pyrenees, which is a 3 hours bus ride from Barcelona. With more than 210 km of a run, it is the largest skiing area close to Barcelona.

This resort usually offers uncrowded pistes and short lift queues. Moreover, the Eastern Pyrenees have 300 days of sunshine, so the weather is marvelous for skiing. Since the resort has high altitude, there are also several freeride trails and off-piste runs to enjoy.

Vall de Nuria – source: Wikimedia

Vall de Núria

With an altitude of roughly 2000, you’ll find excellent conditions to get the most out of your small ski adventure near Barcelona. Ideal for 1 day.

Baqueira Beret Station – source: baqueira.es

Baqueira Beret

Baqueira Beret is one of the most prestigious but also the most expensive ski stations near Barcelona, as it offers many services in the facilities and its surroundings for the most exclusive clients.

Baqueira Beret has 157 km of slopes, 7 km of itineraries, 7 km of cross-country skiing and 1010 meters of altitude difference, a real luxury. On the slopes, you will see mountainous peaks that exceed the 3000 meters.

Espot

Espot is a ski area located near Baqueira, next to the National Park of Aigüestortes and Sant Maurici, which is an extra motivation for ski and snowboard lovers.

With this privileged situation, breathtaking views and exceptional snow quality, Espot offers more than 20 km of slopes and 1,000 meters of altitude difference for those who want to ski near Barcelona in a quiet and familiar location.

Port del Comte Station – source: portdelcomte.es

Port of Comte

The ski station of Port del Comte is 143 km from Barcelona. The station is also very familiar, and a good option for those who want to enjoy the pistes without many people.

With 37 tracks and 16 ski lifts, it is surrounded by a beautiful forest of black pine trees. Apart from skiing in the area, you can practice many activities such as hiking, paragliding, zip line or golf, among others.

Port Ainé

Located in the Pyrenees of Lleida, in the municipality of Rialp, and right at the foot of the Pic de l’Orri (2440 meters), you will find the ski station of Port Ainé. It is considered the ski station with the best snow in the Pyrenees for its orientation to this peak.

One of its main attractions of Port Ainé is the Snowpark, for the enjoyment of all and the practice of freestyle. In this ski resort, you will also find different types of accommodation. Among them, the highest hotel of all the Pyrenees. You can get there by car, but there is also a bus line from Barcelona that will take you directly to the ski station.

The after-ski scene in all these ski stations near Barcelona is much quieter than in Austria or Switzerland, but nevertheless, you will find some nightlife especially in Grandvalira. The most lively nightlife you will probably find in Pas de la Casa in Andorra.

Don’t miss out on this fantastic run and book your trip to the Pyrenees and enjoy great skiing close to Barcelona with a clear, blue sky!
